Due to where the weekends have fallen in the Idol cycle, and the extended deadlines - it's a *second* Weekend Edition for Week 9!

The poll closes tomorrow at 7pm EST, so make sure to get out there and support your favorites!http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/983712.html

Hopefully one of those favorite things is Idol itself - and you want to introduce people to it via Second Chance http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/981280.html

We're so close to our 1,000th member, it would be a shame to leave that on the table. But that seems to be what is going to occur. I guess that means the excitement will wait for later.

We've been watching the short films nominated for Oscars. I don't know about you, but I don't tend to think about the short films that are out there - the live action, documentaries and animation that really raise the bar. These have been amazing.

What has caught you by surprise lately (in a good way)?

VOD offers nominated films. I've watched two: Nocturnal Animals, and Arrival. Liked the former, loved the latter. At at least a third of the price of going to the cinema, this is how I prefer to view. Also, no fragrance, cell phones, people talking all the way through the movie, getting up and down umpteen times, and the sticky floor makes my viewing pleasure a genuine pleasure.

I haven't seen Nocturnal Animals, but I loved Arrival. I want to watch it again.

I am actually watching it for the second time now. (4.99 gets me the movie for 48hrs.)

I edited out a huge spoiler. My bad!

We watched Nocturnal Animals last night.

It's one of those things where you sit and pick apart the different levels afterward and realize how much is in there.

So many trolley problems!

I haven't gone out to see the shorts this year, and they're one of my favorite parts of Oscar season. I don't know where around here shows them.

In the meantime I've been catching up on long-ago Oscar nominees. "The Ten Commandments" was definitely better than I anticipated from that image of Charlton Heston in bad old age makeup parting the red sea that they show all the time. He had gotten much better (I've seen his first movie - oof) and hadn't hit the hammy phase - though you could see glimpses of it in old Moses.

I don't know where the shorts are running around here. I have not seen one of this year's nominated films either. I think I'd like LaLa Land, though, because I'm a sucker for musicals. Manchester-by-the-Sea, naturally -- gotta root for hometown films and hometown stars ;)

My HVAC is going nuts with the warmer weather we've been having. One zone has conked out and the other zone is working OT to the tune of it being 80F or higher in here. The oil dealer can't figure it out. Meanwhile we're all melting.

I really want to see Manchester-by-the-Sea.

There's a Russian comic book series that I really like for some reason (I don't know, it takes place in St. Petersburg and has a gay plague doctor. That's my aesthetic). It's getting a feature movie soon but they started out with a short film, and the short film just premiered at the Berlin Film Fest. I was surprised it wasn't total crap...actually really fun.

You can watch the short film here (Legally, it was uploaded by Bubble Comics themselves.) You can select English subtitles (unless you want to watch it entirely in Russian for some reason).

I watched this short last night and I loved every fricken second of it. Not a moment's wasted in it, and it IS a lot of fun.

I've been meaning to read the comic, too, and the short kinda sold me on it. Just because I love Grom so much already, hah.

CAN YOU READ RUSSIAN if you do I can send you the comics

If you don't you can at least get the first 7 issues in English on Comixology. Supposedly they already translated quite a bit of the rest (the series is 50 issues long, and then two issues have been released of the spinoff/sequel) but the Comixology review process takes forever.

I caaaaan't but I have been half-tempted to learn because my child has been obsessed with the Russian alphabet off and on since he was like, 5. Maybe I can teach myself how to read it xD. I've known people who've taught themselves how to read Japanese so they can read manga -- this isn't much different, right?

Yeah, English translations often DO take forever. I've been meaning to read at least those seven issues but job hunting and mini-health crises and all have plagued me/eaten up my time (example: the child is dealing with stomach bug #2 in a month... first one he gave to the rest of the house and we all nearly died because we don't know how to just lay down and rest like my child does xD).

But yes, I want to read this. xD

Cyrillic is the shit. Learn Russian with your kid!

At least working on the Duolingo app might be fun for one/both of you. I play around with it sometimes just so I don't forget grammar if I'm not speaking to Russians a lot. It's pretty intensive with only requiring a time commitment of a few minutes. It's fun to learn even a little.

Hmmm. I think duolingo is probably a good idea -- he's good with tech and he'd have fun with that, too. Thanks!

I would LOVE to have them in Russian! What format can you send them in?

I'll PM you
