Happy weekend all!

I am at work today and tomorrow but tonight my man and I are going to see this...Sh*tfaced Shakespeare, lol! http://www.shit-facedshakespeare.com/

It looks pretty hilarious. Basically, a Shakespearean-trained acting troupe puts on a play - this time it's Midsummer Night's Dream - and each night one of the cast members is randomly selected to be drunk while performing. We are going out to eat first, and then head to the theater for some "culture," ha!

Hiking always makes for a good weekend!

I wonder....if we should open a discussion in the GR about reading/commenting on fellow entries each week? It seems that not only is this current season a bit quiet in here...there's a strange sort of silence in the weekly reading. Or maybe others aren't experiencing that?

I think there were a couple of weeks when I was unable to do much reading. I know there was one week when I posted here that I was voting for everyone because I just couldn't do the reading. It is my loss if I don't read, because it's the reading that makes me a better writer, and I do believe that since joining therealljidol in season nine my writing has improved.

I've noticed comments dropping off as the week continues. I'm just as guilty reading/not commenting in attempting to read everything. It's always been an Idol flaw with the number of entries out there in that nobody has ever come up with a definitive way of dealing with it all.

I think, too, our numbers have shrunk, and when you have a smaller pool of people involved, commentary and such isn't as forthcoming as it would be if the numbers were larger.

I think, too, our attention spans are splintered. I've noticed it in myself where I may come on LJ and scan my FL, but I won't linger here unless there's a specific reason. And when there is a specific reason, my attention gets diverted by RL stuff. Dropping off/jumping back on gets wearing after awhile, so sometimes I don't even bother jumping. This past week was RL hell in Kizzy World; I was barely on here and completely forgot about voting

I was just having this conversation yesterday with someone else in the context of a different online venue.

It's hard (for me) to be online right now. I'm usually on-the-spot for Green Rooms when they open, and though I'm historically crap at commenting on entries, I've been crappier this season than ever before. In fact, I've forgotten to vote more than once, because going online is fucking hard.

It's like every time I sign on my computer I hear about something horrible that is happening over which I have no control. I have literally spent entire days lately where I've not gone online at. all. This has never happened outside of catastrophic hardware failures. Like, never, since I got my first subscription to AOL.

Plus, the Russians have fucked up LJ notifications. (OK, it might not have been the Russians, but they are, in fact, fucked up) so, on the days I am brain-fogged becaue the House of Representatives voted to kill puppies, I don't get the reminder to go read the Green Room or reply to comments on an entry.

So, I'm sucking at Idol right now. I will try to do better. I just feel like lately there's been a death in my family every goddamned day, and most of the people I spend my time with are feeling the same way.

I'm spending as much time outside as I can. It's 70 degrees outside, and that's insanely warm for Pennsylvania. I went for a long walk and now I'm sitting on our back deck enjoying the warmth.

I think it got close to 60 up here. Why can't it stay like this until actual spring???

Apparently my weekend will be spent having a cold. The Plague that's been traveling around my irkplace decided to visit.

And yes, I spell it irkplace for a reason.

I'm so sorry you've been attacked by the dreaded lurgie (I am not sure of the spelling of this Monty Python word.) So not the way anyone wants to spend their weekend.

Got the irkplace right away! Good one! I love it!

Ugh, we've got a couple of those floating around What's Now Current Employer too. Thankfully it has seemed to bypass me :knocks wood:

I'm off from work on a Sunday. Sundays are time-and-a-half here. Working them adds $ to your paycheck, and a lot of people depend on that $, myself included. As long as it's one Sundaty a month I won't complain. More than this? Oh, you'd better believe I'd be raising holy hell.

It's so weird to be home this morning. So, so weird.

Now that the Write-Off is over, I can comment/direct people's attention to the http://aniron-iorhael.livejournal.com/246971.html and something was said that meant a lot to me. There was a lot in there that did, but I want to highlight this bit:

" It felt the most relaxed place I’ve ever been a part of. The other writing group I used to be in was super formal and they wanted to edit your piece rather than just enjoy it for what it was. … Everyone here always responded with things that they liked or identified with, and I loved that."

Anyone who was around for Season 6 and 7 might recall the Great Opt-In/Opt-Out Argument. There were some people fighting for the idea that people should be here for constructive feedback and if they weren't, they needed to tell people. There was another side that said that people just wanted to write - and while constructive feedback and editing was great - that people should say if they wanted it or not.

I'm in the Opt-In crowd and always have been. I work with a beta reader on my personal stuff, and think it's a great and useful process. But I also think that it's a personal decision to invite specific, and trusted, critical feedback rather than just opening it up to the masses.

I've always liked that Idol, in general, has always been more about personal reactions to pieces, and building each other up rather than "I need to 'teach you' why your piece is wrong", that I've seen elsewhere. (and it's weird, because it's always from people who have no real qualifications in that sort of thing anyway...)

So, thanks guys! I'm glad someone pointed that out and appreciates it as well!
