Green Room - Week 1 - Day 1

Last night was busy, so let's recap for those just tuning in:

The Results of the Veterans poll are in: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951424.html as well as finding out what the advantage is that they, and the newbies winners, were receiving.

The Week 1 topic, the first mandatory one was posted: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951685.html

Note: You do have two byes, but do you really want to start cutting away that safety net out from under you on WEEK 1?

And, because the topic is up, there is a new Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/951867.html

The new topic also means that there is a deadline - and I've already stated that it will also be the deadline for people to sign up to play Season 10. So, next Wednesday evening that door will be closing for anyone still on that "should I?" bubble.

How are you doing today?

It's my day off. I've been up since 4:45 thanks to my husky alarm clocks which go into overdrive if they don't hear my alarm at the appointed time. Since then I've been bouncing between the Work Room, FB, and food blogs looking for Thanksgiving appetizer recipes. I'm tired of making the same old things every year.

Do you make brussel sprouts? They are delicious when put in a frying pan with a little fish sauce, soy sauce, and/or balsamic vinegar. Also great with nuts alongside like chestnuts or pecans. My favorite thanksgiving vegetable!

Also we will be making our sweet potatoes "fry style" by cutting them into strips and roasting with olive oil and garlic. yum!

We are having our "work Thanksgiving" today (because so many people have time off next week).

What are YOU Fake-thankful for?

It will be sunny today with highs in the high 60s. So therefore it is laundry day! We hang out our clothes to dry, so sunny day = laundry day. :D

I am such a newby that I have a basic question. Is it okay to use fanfic to fill these prompts, or is it all-original only?
Nov. 18th, 2016 02:55 pm (UTC)
You can pretty much write anything you want, be it original or fanfic.

BUT, and it's a Sir Mix-a-lot approved sized one, keep in mind that the people reading this aren't going to be as familiar (or at all familiar) with the characters and situations as you might find in a community specifically about said fandom.

You are going to have to sell it without the benefit of everyone knowing the ins-and-outs of that universe.

I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by all of this! I sort of failed at reading/commenting on the veterans Week 0 posts, but I set up a spreadsheet now thanks to the person who shared a template so I am organized and ready to go for Week 1.

Hang in there. It gets easier!

We're #5 in the Top Communities on Livejournal today!

Which, probably doesn't say a lot of good things about Livejournal today - but I'll take it! :)

39th over-all. During the off-season, we had dropped down to 620something at one point.

Again, that says more about LJ... but again, I'll still take it!

Hey Green Room!
Hey Gary!- Thanks for the introduction to Beach Slang! This is my my genre! I'm a Philly rocker and if I had heard this growing up on the streets- it would have been my theme song! It's straight forward rock and roll- the lyrics make the tune.

I saw them (well, him right now - it's a long story) play in Orlando not long ago. It was completely amazing.

When people ask me to describe the band, I say it's like if Paul Westerberg had grown up listening to the Replacements. ;)

I'm super excited for the 30 degree temperature difference tomorrow!

I'm feeling a bit upset and angry this morning, but I won't go into the ins and outs as to why. I'm trying to focus on writing my entry to get myself out of that loop.

Before I got put into that loop, though, I was super excited yesterday because I went into the library and discovered my books, which I'd donated a couple of months ago, had been listed as "Available" and "Check Shelf." I went to look for them, and couldn't find them, but the Branch Manager, who was the guy who accepted my books and was super excited to have them in the library, saw me and asked me how I was doing. I told him I'd seen my books were supposed to be there, so he helped me find them (they were still on a cart and hadn't been shelved in the New Books section yet). He put one of them on prominent display before commenting how important it is to have books like mine, especially now after the election, so we got to chatting about the election for a while. Then I realised I was late to meet my friend (and former Idoler), so I went to meet her and have lunch. Then we went back to the library so I could show her my books on the shelf, and both of them were now prominently displayed, so I photographed them there, because that's such a monumental moment for me. As far as I know, it's the first time any of my books have been in such a big library (I do have a copy of my novel in the Center for Sex & Culture in San Francisco as well, but they don't have such a wide network of libraries connected to it). Then the Branch Manager saw I was back, and asked if he could photograph me with my books so he could post it to the library's Facebook page. Of course I said yes! (Click here for a link to the photo on Facebook if you want to see.) The picture I posted to Facebook of just my books has presently seen 117 reactions (not counting comments), which could very well be the most reactions I've ever had to a picture I've posted on Facebook. (I'm generally stunned any time I get more than 20).

Gary, your name (and the URL for LJ Idol) is in a book in Oakland Public Library now. ;)

I burned myself a night ago or two and have severe blisters on my hand. Luckily not my fingers.

That is all I have to report.

Oh... um. I didn't go to wrestling tonight cause I couldn't find the urge to spend $20 and go there and come back home by myself.

The Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter is nearing it's actual end after 4 years as the big box special editions of the game and crazy 20 episode documentary with 2 commentary tracks and 5+ hours of extra footage.

Um... what else? There's a Powerpuff Pop Up store here. Considering checking it out.

I can't even explain my evening, because, like... it would be indiscreet.

Working with children is 99% brilliant, and 1% horrific.

Tonight was the 1%.

Send kittens.

I'm alive. That's about the best I can say right now.

I called my representatives today (well, representatives and senators) to tell them that I find the nomination of Jeff Sessions for AG to be patently horrifying. Also that Steve Bannon should not be brought on either, due to his direct ties to the white nationalist movement.

For those that are also in the US: please consider calling your representatives/senators and telling them that you do not agree with the appointment of either of these men. Regardless of where you fall politically, both are extremely underqualified and their ties to the alt-right are horrifying, to say the least.
Nov. 19th, 2016 03:53 am (UTC)
First let me say that I completely agree with everything you said, including the need to contact TPTB to let them know it's not ok.

But please, in the name of all that is holy, can we make Idol as much of a politically-free zone as possible. There is literally NO WHERE ELSE on the internet I can go and spend five minutes before my head explodes.

...so...seriously -- the green room is blue, and somebody forgot the cookies. That's ok, because I brought FREE THAI FOOD FOR EVERYONE! Yaaaaaaaaaay!

So if you want some, you have to come over and get it. That being said -- it's technically tomorrow, but for me it's still today. That's what you get when you do shift work overnight all the time.

Whoever doesn't get any Thai food, I'm willing to get some for you if you show up late. You might have to stay a while, though -- those silly Thai restaurant people refuse to stay open 24 hours... (:C)
Nov. 19th, 2016 08:00 am (UTC)
:eyes Thai food:

:remembers she's on her first cup of coffee and has a bagel in the toaster:

Ah, I'll be doing overnights next week. I usually take myself out to breakfast after my shift so I miss the traffic going home, but it'll depend on when I get out and whether places will be open :p
