Results - Week 21

There are some weeks where you sort of know what's coming and although you may not be happy about it, you have time to make your peace with it.

There are other times when you think you know what's going to happen and then things change.

This week was a little bit of both of those things.

To call it a "blow" just means that every week until the end is going to be a shot to the gut.

Fortunately, we are close enough to the end that we won't be without these two for long. (Or rather everyone else will be joining them soon!)

Leaving us this week are halfshellvenus and kickthehobbit

Personally, I really enjoyed the entries from both of them - but that's the point we are at, where the best thing you can say is that you were happy with the writing you've done. (Really, that's every week!)

Thank you so much for coming out, and I hope that we will see you in the Home Game!

*Breathes deep* Poop! I'm sorry to see either of you guys go, but both sucks a lot. :(

Kickthehobbit: You amaze me with the quantity and quality of what you can invent, create, and produce in a shockingly small window of time. It's truly impressive, and I love reading the words you make. :)
Halfshellvenus: I didn't comment on your work as much as you commented on mine, and I regret that. You write interesting, charming things, and are so very thoughtful. <3

You guys both rock some serious socks.

Thank you very much! That's nice to hear. :)

Oh, it's not that amazing, when you start by writing a really LONG shitty first draft. You write long, then you cut out the shit. That's easy. It's learning to identify what the shitty bits are that's difficult (and what I'm still working on!). :)

Thank you. ♥

Both kickthehobbit and halfshellvenus have created great work and been active, engaged participants this season. I am particularly sorry to see them both eliminated in a week where they had such excellent entries. In KTH's case, her science fiction piece was one of the strongest pieces this season overall and in HSV case, she created a terrific piece using a boldly different structure than she's used before.

I hope both of you continue participating this season and hope to see more of your writing.

Thank you. I thought both of these stories were good as well, though we're at the point where everyone's stuff is really good. That makes it harder, but what a set of competitors!

Thank you, again, for your really lovely comments on this week's piece. I loved it—it was easily my favorite thing I've written this season—and it has been exceedingly gratifying to realize that one of my favorite writers really dug it, too. :)

We're at that place where every week it's going to be hard and we're going to lose good people and it's going to suck.

::group hug::

Congrats to you both, for a bunch of good writing.

Home Game, ladies. Home Game.

Hear, hear! What kathrynrose said!
May. 10th, 2016 03:29 am (UTC)
We've been at that place for a while, for me. :)

Seeing you back and active in Idol has been one of the best parts of this season, for me. I hope you keep it up—I want to see you in the Top 4! :D

As far as Home Game—it's not super-likely, but hey, watch this space. fodschwazzle promised to write a weird thing with me about monster wrestling, and it's going to be awesome!
May. 10th, 2016 04:15 am (UTC)
Thanks! That means a lot.

I'll keep my eyes open for it.
May. 10th, 2016 05:41 am (UTC)
Monster wrestling!

I think I need to read that. Definitely. :D
May. 10th, 2016 05:48 am (UTC)
Monster wrestling! fodschwazzle found out I'd gotten voted out, and after making the appropriate noises, rubbed his hands together gleefully and reminded me that I promised him we'd do it. :)

Really, that entry could have been an Idol post in and of itself. It was rich with weirdness, with monster AND wrestling references.

A goldmine. :D

Boy, why am I not in chats with Ian and escalating the weirdness to infinity? Who doesn't need that? :D

I've had a great time, and I think I've written some really good things this time around-- which is really what Idol is for, to me. This week's entry was one I was really pleased with, and I can at least say that I have no regrets of "thinking I could have done better" with that one. I thought the voting might be better, but I have no qualms about the piece!

Good luck to everyone else as you continue forward. :)

You have had a GREAT showing this season! You wrote a ton of pieces I just loved, but the last three were stellar work! Very funny, very tightly written, and truly entertaining.

You are such an amazing Idolar. Your comments are always so thorough and indicative of your close and careful reading.

I think I will never look at cardboard standees the same way again! :)

Thank you very much!

Somewhere, Bob and Bonnie are off riding the rails together, looking for new adventures... :)
May. 10th, 2016 02:17 am (UTC)
Well, I'm fucking gutted. You're both fantastic. Jenn, I really wanted and expected to see you in the final.

Just. Bah.
May. 10th, 2016 03:24 am (UTC)

Hey, if I had to pick something to go out on, I'm just glad it was this week! :)
May. 10th, 2016 02:35 am (UTC)
The work of both writers was marked by unfailing quality, but also variety. You never knew what you were going to read. They were both risk takers and exceptional writers. I will, in particular, miss halfshellvenus

:) Spoken like a true husband! :)

I knew this week would be my last from the moment I hit "post"—Idol has an uncanny way of hating what pieces I love the best, and that trend remains unbroken. This week's piece was one of the strongest I have written in recent memory, and if I had to pick something to go out on, I would have chosen it. Going out on what you love, thinking, "I could not have done better" is a great feeling.

So. Before I disappear into the chasm that is preparing madly for a meeting with my PI tomorrow morning to review my dissertation defense date, I want to thank a handful of people. :)

halfshellvenus, prog_schlock, whipchick—your comments were always the ones I looked forward to the most. Having someone do a careful reading of your piece and give you detailed feedback is an enormous gift, and I am grateful beyond words that you took the time to leave nice words on what I wrote.

orockthro, I'm glad that Cislyn dragged you into this miniseason! I've loved your stuff and it's been a joy to get to know you (and temporarily flail alongside you). :)

porn_this_way, kathrynrose, it's been great to see the two of you back in Idol. Honestly, I loved all of Team Avocado's stuff, and I am totally stoked that the five of you made the top 10. I can't think of anyone who deserves it more, and if you could win as a team, I would cheer you on all the way.

lrig_rorrim, gratefuladdict, you two will always be my partners-in-flail, and I love you both to bits. I think you knew that, though. ;)

More generally, thank you to everyone that has read and enjoyed what I've done. Prior to writing for Season 9 of Idol, I had never written spec fic, and I'm always amazed and humbled to realize that people like what I have written enough to vote for it and keep me in this long.

I'll be around. I can't guarantee that I'll Home Game (I very rarely want to—and I'm very sorry if the last of the topics I submitted comes up, it's reaaaaally bad), but I will be around, cheering you all on as you get nearer the finish line. :)

Thanks all.

Thanks. :)
May. 10th, 2016 05:44 am (UTC)
Thank you-- and I'm glad you were so pleased with the story you wrote this week. I think it and many others over the last 2 years would make a fine collection of stories for a book. If Season 9 was your first time with the genre, I'd say you're very comfortable with it and have proven you know how to use it!
May. 10th, 2016 05:51 am (UTC)
Before Season 9 I didn't know what spec fic was, so...yeah. :)

I don't know if I'm going to gather everything into a book (that's a tall order, especially since I've played around with a lot of different ideas!), but I definitely want to try to get some of these into print. Whether I succeed or not is anyone's guess, and I know a lot of them need a fair amount of work (as much as I love what I wrote this week, I keep seeing the little flaws in it whenever I reread it...), but hey, never know unless you try, right? :)
May. 10th, 2016 09:24 am (UTC)
It has been an absolute pleasure to read your work this season. Thank you for sharing it with us!
May. 10th, 2016 01:44 pm (UTC)
There shall always be flail. Always. *hugs*
May. 10th, 2016 05:46 am (UTC)
Huggles* sorry to see you guys go, especially on such great entries
