Vote - Week 20

A few words from clauderainsrm:

Good evening. Well, it’s not really a good evening because I have some bad news.

Well, it’s good news for some of you.

Because you are now the Top 10!

cheapxdate missed the deadline, and witchwife posted a sacrifice entry.

Personally, these are crushing blows, because I thought both of them added quite a bit to the mix, and was looking forward to seeing how they were going to take it to the next level in the coming weeks.

Their departure brings us the two contestants who were going to be eliminated this week, one from each poll.

So - what do we do now? I could eliminate more than originally planned… or do something else.

When push comes to shove - I’m going to “do something else”.

The contestant with the most votes in each poll will receive a special advantage that could help you win the competition! (or at least get you one step closer to doing so) I’m actually kind of excited to see how it will be used at this stage of game.

The poll closes Monday, May 2nd at 8pm EDT

Good luck to everyone!

Egads! Oddly, I don't usually feel bad when people are eliminated via voting (because that's the natural order of things and we'll nearly all be voted out that way) but I hate seeing players leave in other ways. I have very much enjoyed the work of both cheapxdate and witchwife and am very sorry to see them go.

Especially this close to the end.

Thank you, prog_shlock! I am sad to be leaving the competition, but some extra responsibilities I had come up this week just made it impossible to get my pieces finished. I never ever imagined I'd get so far in my first season, so I am not regretful whatsoever. I've struggled with time management issues and the length of my writing getting away from me ALL season so I knew it would probably contribute to my eventual elimination, but it's something I'm going to work on for next season!

Your comments on my pieces have always been so thoughtful and interesting and you've shared so many cool stories and videos. You always take the time to read and really think about the writing and then give such thorough feedback... it's such an amazing thing to receive as a writer and I've appreciated it so much!

I've really enjoyed your work all season and its been easy to have thoughtful things to say when responding to thoughtful work. :D

Thank you for sharing your writing with us all this season!

The advantage could be huge, especially given how close most of the members of this Top 10 are personally.

Which means that even though it's technically "secret", I'm sure everyone is going to know within an hour of me telling the two people. :)

So maybe I should just announce it when the poll closes.
Apr. 30th, 2016 02:58 am (UTC)
A technical question for you, Gary! If the same person gets the top votes in each poll, will you still award the secret power to two people - and how will you choose who the other person is, in that case?
Apr. 30th, 2016 03:05 am (UTC)
If the same person wins both polls - then the voters want them to have two advantages.

Iiiiiiiinteresting! Thank you!

On the one hand, WOW, top ten, y'all! We made it! Congrats and high fives all around!

On the other hand, I'm sad to see witchwife and cheapxdate out of the running in this way, in particular. :/

On the third hand, a non-elimination poll! Gary, it looks like the velociraptors got to you after all. That's understandable. They are terrifying!

I am prepared for the pain. Nope. Not at all. So sad to see witchwife sacrifice this close to the end, and for cheapxdate to miss a deadline is beyond sad. I ache for both of you. I hope that we'll see you in the Home Game. I am hoping to post on Sunday. Maybe I'll see you there.

Your enthusiasm and thoughtfulness has been so wonderful throughout the whole season. While I'm certainly sad to leave the competition, it was unavoidable given my lack of time this week and I have no regrets! Submitting something unfinished that I wasn't proud of would have been a much more painful way to go out after all the successes and highs I've felt throughout the competition. I really need to work on my time management and curbing the length of my writing and so I'm looking forward to practicing during the Home Games!

Well..er..I guess witchwife has used two topics to write one entry. Her heading says so..Though I may be wrong. Just wondering if it's a sacrifice or a misunderstanding as to what was expected.
May. 12th, 2016 02:11 am (UTC)
It was a sacrifice. I ended up being called in to work before I could finish the entry that I was working on. I used this as a sacrifice instead - it's not something that I was fully satisfied with, but it did the trick to at least not make my departure in vain.

getting very close
in case I don't see you again for a while (family and such RL taking me away from LJ more and more these days)
I just want to say
Thanks for all the good reading!!!! It's been fun seeing and feeling your work.
AND thank you for all your kind comments on my work too.

This was my first foray into Idol. I've been following it for years and I've missed the sign ups by days more than once (last cycle I missed it by HOURS lol), so finally getting to participate was something I'd been looking forward to for a long time. I don't think there's any way to prepare for Idol. The challenges of weekly prompts and deadlines and life being unpredictable (not to mention the spaces of time where you CAN write, but your inspiration is no where to be found) are more difficult than I expected, but I've had SO much fun. Years ago I was heavily involved in fandom and I wrote ALL the time, but it's been very long since then and I dare say pre-Idol the last time I put a completed piece of writing online was... 2013?

This has been SUCH a trip. 20 weeks. 20-ish pieces of writing. I never thought I'd make it this far. Being surrounded by such amazing writers has been so inspiring (and sometimes intimidating!) and I've been absolutely humbled by ever single vote I've received. Even though I'm bowing out in a less than ideal way the experience has been so incredible.

As it turns out, I knew going into this week that it would be a struggle. None of the prompts nudged my muse & having to write 2 pieces struck horror in my heart. I've really had a hard time curbing the length of my writing. It's a problem I've always had and it was really exacerbated by Idol's tight deadlines. kathrynrose was kind enough to send me some tips and writing exercises to help with this and I'm really going to use the down time between Idols (there will be another.. right? RIGHT?) to practice and get better at writing shorter pieces that are still just as rich and entertaining. On top of that, I'm a teacher and this week was the NJ Parcc exams. State testing is a pain on it's own, but NJ had massive technical issues with the newly computerized exam that led to crisis mode - extra meetings, extra time, extra stress and I knew that there just wouldn't be an opportunity for me to write two pieces for Idol that I'd be proud submitting. And, so, here I am. Out of the competition, but not at all regretful.

Thank you SO much to Gary for all the hard work he does for Idol, for the always entertaining MCing and weekly posts, and for catching that extra bye I had that one week way back. This competition is such a worthwhile experience and means so much to so many. It has really renewed my love of writing and crafting stories and I am so grateful for it's existence. Thank you to my OG team, Team Norbert, (dmousey, ellakite, kehen_crow, and majesticarky) for being welcoming and supportive. I know I wasn't always the most available or responsive teammate, but you took a chance on me and I appreciate it. I didn't really anticipate the time commitment of Idol and it was overwhelming and there was a definite learning curve, but I'm now much more equipped to juggle the posts and the deadlines and being a contributing member of a team.

Which leads me to my 2nd group/"team," Team Coelacanth! kickthehobbit, gratefuladdict, fodschwazzle & lrig_rorrim - I'd come to admire so many of you in the competition, so working with you was such a fantastic opportunity. Thank you for being so welcoming and flail-y and friendly and for letting me see your brainstorming process.

Thank you to everyone who read and voted and especially those who took the time to leave comments and feedback. Those always made my whole damn week!

If anyone would like to add me as a friend, I'd love to have you and keep in touch. I haven't been able to write a life update/entry since the beginning of the season with all my free LJ time being focused on Idol, but I'll be getting back into that soon.

And, of course, I look forward to competing against you all again next season! I'll be an even stronger (and hopefully less lengthy writer!) next time, so watch out! xD

(Now I can finally go & reply to all the comments on my last piece, which is way overdue! I'm glad the Choose Your Own Adventure was my final offering because that was really a labor of love to write and I was really proud of it. So, it's relieving to at least go out on a personal high note!)
Apr. 30th, 2016 06:52 pm (UTC)
LOL the irony of having to shave down my comment to fit the LJ character count. -_-

I better get on those writing exercises!

You crack me up! I wasn't aware there was a character count!

Hugs and love to all my team Norby friends and to the rest of you crazy, talented people! Hubs is slooowly getting better. Am still spending far to much time in docs offices, but whatcha gonna do, you know?

That top ten list! Wow....
Apr. 30th, 2016 07:50 pm (UTC)
We often say Idol is a marathon, not a sprint. I don't think anyone can really understand that until they've experienced it.

You did really well - top twelve - esp. for a newbie. And once you've competed you're family - kind of like organized crime, you're in, you're one of us. :P

I hope you'll home game if you have time. (The pressure is off.) :)

We had so much fun with you!! Team Coelacanth FTW!!

So bummed to see you out. Can't wait to see you kill it in the next season!

Writing and flailing and brainstorming together last week (was it really only last week? Time is doing wonky things in my head right now) was a lot of fun! And whenever you want another pair of eyes on a piece of work or some specific feedback, you know where to find me. May your writing adventures all be awesome ones. <3

I'm sorry real-life deadlines pushed you out of Idol-- that's so hard, when you've invested so much over the months.

I hope RL issues settle down, and that you'll be able to write at a more leisurely pace for awhile!

You're a great writer and I'm so glad you joined this season! Hope to see you in future seasons!
