Green Room - Week 19 - Day 1

Last night we had some surprising results: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/921465.html

A surprising twist with the topics: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/921736.html

A surprising reveal in the Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/921875.html

and now a surprising Home Game! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/922333.html

(OK, technically none of these were surprises *to me*. But for you - SURPRISE!!!)

One of the most common questions I've been getting via email since last night is "Is this a trap?" (the twist)

I promised I would address this in the Green Room, so I was answering everyone at once.

Do I *look like a guy who would be trying to get you to fall into a trap*?

The follow-up, of course being, what part of it is a trap?

Is the "trap" that it looks like a trap so you can worked up and trip? Is it actually a trap? Does it just look like a trap and the actual trap is off to the side where you normally would step to avoid the trap?

Is it just a trap set for Admiral Ackbar?

LOL...Reminds me of former Idol topics about "It's a Trap!" and "Trip-trapping"!

That first one was how I found out that there was a transphobic interpretation to the phrase "It's a Trap!"

Much like yesterday when I found out that was a racist way to talk about hot sauce.

How did I miss the racist hot sauce?

Clinton mentioned that she liked hot sauce (which apparently she's been saying since at least 2008 - that she got hooked in the 90s and carries it everywhere, like Bob Graham carries around notebooks!)

There's apparently a reference in a Beyonce song (the new one that is "controversial")

I've seen a couple links about the links between the African American community and hot sauce (the stereotype being that "they like it on everything") but I've literally never heard that one. So I definitely learned something yesterday.

People from Louisiana carry it around when they travel all the time. Why do you think Tabasco (made in New Iberia, La) makes those tiny bottles?

I would love to love hot sauce, but first they would have to remove the vinegar that's used as a preservative.

The vinegar totally ruins it for me! :(

That IS the tiniest hot sauce bottle I've ever seen, though. Pocket-sized, even.

I recently discovered that "its a trap" has an edge of transphobia to it. Thank you, Internet, for ruining everything.

Well, YEAH.

Although the twist itself feels like enough of a trap, really...

I have to know: how is "it's a trap" transphobic? I'd look it up but my internet has decided it wants to be spotty.

Oh, lord. I wish I didn't know this, but the internet is an awful place.

The "it's a trap!" phrase (or, as it has devolved, referring to someone as a "trap") is a perjorative applied to trans women—that you think they're AFAB, find them attractive and are interested in having sex with them, but once you get closer to them, you discover that they're not, and suddenly, instead of being desirable, they are an object of disgust/mockery. It's implying that the way the woman you're pursuing is dressed or acting is trying to "trap" dudes into going after her, only to discover that she's not cis gender and it's a dealbreaker.

Because there's nothing a trans woman wants more than to attract some racist homophobe dudebro, take him to a private place, and surprise him into murdering her.
Apr. 20th, 2016 12:13 am (UTC)
Exactly. :| But, you know, appealing to the feminine beauty standard must mean you want male attention, amirite?
Apr. 20th, 2016 12:28 am (UTC)
That's why *I* put on chapstick and clothing that isn't gunny sacks...come and get it, boys!
Apr. 20th, 2016 12:13 am (UTC)
Uh-huh. So it came from people who listened to "Lola" a few too many times.

Yep. The Internet amplifies the awful in people.
