Green Room - Week 16 - Day 1

We are now 16 weeks into Friend and Rivals and nearly to the official 10 year mark in Idol in general and a couple questions have been asked over the past couple days that gave me a bit of pause.

Mostly because if veterans didn't know the answers, then obviously I was not getting the message across in a strong enough way.

The questions being "Can I vote even though I am no longer a contestant" and "Do you need to be a member of the community to vote?"

Sure, there are exceptions to the rule - and when those happen, I will let you know "Hey, this is a Contestant Only vote" or "You have to be a member of the community to vote".

But, as a general rule - the votes are open to everyone. This is deliberate. Because I *want* you to tell your friends what is going on here. NOT as a "Just click the box for me!!!"

But rather a "Come and check this out!", encouraging them to read not only your entry, but other people's as well. This has been going on for 10 years, and a big part of that is that everyone has been doing their share over those years of bringing in new readers!

Readers don't appear from nowhere. (Well, occasionally we get a friend of a friend of a friend who once heard about Idol and decided to check it out - but even those you can trace back to their source) Every time someone reads your entry, and votes for you, or you get a comment from "someone passing through" that you don't personally know - that's someone that *someone else* brought into the Idol fold. Maybe it was three years ago, maybe it was 9. Perhaps they just started reading last week.

So yes, absolutely you can vote if you're not a current contestant.

Yes, PLEASE tell your friends about this place. If we are going to have *any* sort of future, that's on your shoulders in the same way it was on the shoulders of the people who told *you* about it in the first place!

They don't *have* to be a member of the community to vote. Obviously, that would be awesome and during a community only vote they would already be set up... and it certainly makes it easier to follow what's going on if you get the updates. But it's not required.

So get out there and spread the Good Word of Idol as a place where you can read some awesome entries (and maybe make a few friends in the process)!

If you have any other questions you've been hanging onto, now would be a good time to ask them!

But you can have access to the cookies, anyway... 'causeI'm just in that sort of mood.

Good. This is definitely a cookie kind of morning.

The biggest Idol-related question I have this morning is - What is a sofa square?
Mar. 29th, 2016 02:51 pm (UTC)
A quilting term, maybe?

A super prim and proper person that doesn't cuss, smoke or listen to rock and roll and sits on the couch all day?

That's kind of how I interpreted it. It seems to be a non-phrase submitted as if it were a phrase!

Like, "octopus biplane" or something. :D

I have no idea. I googled it and it showed me pictures of a foot rest for a sofa.

The other two suggestions were more "traditional". (one of them was almost word for word of someone else's suggestion and the other was pretty close to something else as well). So I threw it into the mix figuring *someone* would either know or be able to do something fun with it!

I've googled it and there are a lot of websites out there that sell sofas.

Somewhere out there is the person who submitted it. At least that person should know what it is.

and right now they are cackling and leaning back in their sofa square to enjoy the show.

I predict this week's show will be mostly stories about lovable monsters.

Yeah, me too. Though those sound like fun things to write about, don't they?

Or a scathing political piece about Trump. Same prompt. ;)
Mar. 29th, 2016 07:12 pm (UTC)
Nope. Too scary. :P
Mar. 30th, 2016 08:26 pm (UTC)
I thought it was some sort of 50s/60s related slang term.
Mar. 30th, 2016 08:30 pm (UTC)

If so, I've never heard it. I mean, we had "square," but not on a sofa. :)

When is the last time to use buys? There's probably a fixed answer, but that's not to say it doesn't change from one season to the next. :D

I think he said until top 25. There are 23 of us.

I'm wrong. Top 20, so this would be the last week, probably.

I know I openly promoted the community and the contest during sign ups to try and bring people over. I don't think many of my friends bit, but that's their prerogative.

And I was posting each entry I wrote, and encouraged people to come read mine and others, and literally couldn't even get my closest friends to read my stuff, let alone others/and or join the community. It's sad, but as writers, we're competing with cat memes as the main literature of our culture.

And as Gary said, we're 16 weeks in at this point. My friends all know this is here, I'm not going to force it on them. But I'm not going to hide it either. I post the link to read and vote, but I know for certain that some people are only going to vote, while most will ignore the link altogether. I hope that people will read my stuff, and everyone else's, but I know that's not realistic. Sadly. I'm not going to sabotage my chance to have someone read my, or other people's work just because I may score some empty votes.

I just want to take a moment to say how much I enjoyed the team aspect for the last few weeks. I know that Team Clueless didn't survive especially long, but I had a great time interacting with sinnamongirl, inteus_mika, ellison and i_love_freddie. That was the best thing so far about the season - meeting four really interesting writers with distinct voices. So thank you, Gary, for that!
