Work Room - Week 7

You're 7 weeks into this adventure.

I've asked you this question before and I'll ask you it again.

Because it's important.

What have you been seeing "out there" that has gotten you curious and what has you shaking your head? I'm NOT asking for names, in fact I prefer you avoid them... but what are you seeing in the competition that you are learning from?

***

The new topics are up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/887291.html

Where are you going with them?

***

and just to repeat myself: It may be in your best interests to form or join teams in the very near future. Just trying to look out for you.

Something I've been pleasantly surprised by in this run of Idol: in season 8 and season 9, on any given topic, you could see a lot of people going for the "obvious approach". This time around, I haven't seen a lot of that. I've been reading every week and I haven't noticed any huge "trends". It's been nice! Everyone's stretching themselves, evidently, and it shows. :)

Also—whoa two (three?) lyrics prompts? Uh, okay.

Yes, the variety of responses has been great, it's made reading and voting easier

I am entertaining the possibility that the "threat" is simply our own reactive natures played against us as the solo pool thins considerably with your warnings.

Of course, I expect you to be fickle and sneaky. I wholeheartedly appreciate that part of the competition.

I want to know who quoted "The Boxer". All I know is that it wasn't me and it was one of the very first songs I learned by heart as a kid (which I realize may say more about me than I'd want but never mind).

I've been seeing people whose writing I already know trying different approaches. I'm particularly paying attention to those who normally write fiction trying their hands at nonfiction as well as vice versa. I think that's great :)

It wasn't me, but I just listened to it again for the first time in a long damned time.

1. It made me cry.
2. I love those guys.
3. I feel fucking old.
4. I bet most of the people in Idol weren't born when the song came out in 1970.

We are old.

You know that sword of Real Life you mentioned in a previous post? yeah. It's hanging over me, and getting closer each week. So I don't think I'll be going into any team, no matter how tempting.

Interesting themes, and all four clicked with a different fandom (and yay, my Belle/Rumpelstiltskin muse is BACK! Take that, canon - YOU CANNOT BEAT ME!). Of course, I promised myself to try and work with original fiction.

Le Sigh.

It'll be a fun week. ;)

I'm leaning towards using this one...

... and it's fitting for how I feel, after my team just lost our de facto leader, kehlen_crow:

My biggest issue, especially with multiple topics, is when I read an entry, and I have no idea what topic it's for without reading the topics and using the power of elimination. It doesn't have to be super obvious, but there's been a few times it has perplexed me.

Other than that I'm loving the variety of entries we're getting: songs, poems, mad libs, board games, fiction, non fiction, play format...

Also the Florence and the Machine lyric is making me want to write a continuation of last week's entry

Teaming with Questions
Now that we've formed Team Clueless, true to our team's name, I have no idea what being on a team is all about. Could somebody link me to the description of team rules or give me some advice about effective teaming?

Many thanks.

EDIT: Ok, I put on my glasses and read the teeny tiny tags and found this and the whole world makes more sense.

What have you been seeing "out there" that has gotten you curious and what has you shaking your head?

I've been inspired by a lot of what I've been reading this season. Mainly other contestants' use of descriptive language. I focus most of my attention on dialogue and can tend to forget about the rest. Sometimes.

So many writers have produced these lines that have stopped me dead in the middle of their entries just admiring that one phrase, word choice, line, etc. Some I've quoted back in my comments. Others I haven't. If there's anything that I've gained from participating this season, it's the inspiration from beautiful, effective, powerful wordcrafting. Wordcrafters. CRAFTERS OF MAGNIFICENT & MAGICAL WORDS. You are all wizards to me.

Things that have me shaking my head... I'm not too sure. I suppose there are some entries with material that I just don't and will never be able to relate to or enjoy. It's no reflection on the writer's ability and I try to see beyond personal preference of subject material while voting, but sometimes that can be a bit of a struggle. The fault is with me and not them.

It may be in your best interests to form or join teams in the very near future. Just trying to look out for you.

I've been enjoying slumming it on my own, but open to joining a team. I have no byes, followers, or secret powers to contribute. (That you know of.) I'd pretty much just be the couch surfer on your team eating all of your potato chips. Think long and hard about that.

I went to a writing group last night and one of the authors told a story from his youth that was so awful and poetic that I think I have to use it this week.

I've loved all the poetry this season. I think it's so badass when writers just go for it.

Gary, why do you want me to write Hannibal fan fiction? I mean, I'm not really upset about it. But yeah. Hannibal fan fiction, or fiction borrowing heavily from Hannibal themes this week.

I'm late to the party but if anyone wants to be on team 'I don't do groups' or alternatively team 'eat the rude' or team 'I'm never online so gosh Gary make this harder for me' I'm in
