Green Room - Week 2 - Day 1

Good morning.

Last night was our first eliminations of Friends and Rivals: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/870894.html

The first time people get to choose which topic to do: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/870987.html

and of course there was also a Work Room: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/871418.html

There are some really interesting conversations happening over in that Work Room, so I would suggest that you go check them out when you have the chance.

I was asked a couple of questions, and continuing the trend of taking things asked that others might be wondering and putting them out there I'll post them here:

- How was the voting this time?

In a regular season, the first couple weeks can be a bit "iffy". Not overly so, but there is almost always some newbie who has friends who get a little too excited and create accounts to vote with.

This time - it was almost all contestants voting.  (with a few alumni. I knew almost all the names)  Which, of course is both good and bad. It's good for the "maintaining intergrity of the poll" way - but bad in the sense of I always want more readers - to I want more people to see what it is that you are doing here.  You deserve it. (and let's be honest - I think Idol deserves it!)

So continue to maintain that integrity, but also get the word out!  It's early yet, and in a difficult time of year to get people to actually do anything. But there's a lot of great stuff coming out from our writers - and it's only going to get better.

We also have the "under 100 contestants" thing happening that will mean there are fewer people reading. In a regular season there are almost 3 times at amount!!!

- Can we "do extra credit" (write an entry for more than one topic) to get a bye back (if we had to use one in Week 1)

That's a two parter:
- Can you write more than one entry? Of course. One is your actual entry and any others are for the "Home Game".  There's currently not a separate thread, but you can post them in Green Rooms or Work Rooms.

- Will it count for anything? Give you an extra bye?  Of course not.

You can however get byes from contestants as a "gift bye" (where they sacrifice one of theirs to give to you).  You can also join a team that is pooling their byes, and have access to additional ones.

- Speaking of joining a team - you have until 24 hours before the topic deadline email me any changes to your team.  Do you want to add someone (you can have up to 5) or someone wants to change teams/become an individual.... do you want to change the team name?
Anything team related needs to be sent to me at clauderainsrm@gmail.com by that cut-off point. You send it beforehand, then it's on me if something is wrong. You send it after - it's on you.  Never make it be on you. ;)

If you are still doing your holiday shopping - especially if you are doing it through Amazon, check out our store! http://astore.amazon.com/li0cd-20   Even if you don't buy anythng listed (and you should - there's a ton of books by Idol and Idol-related authors!) if you use that link, you are giving back.

As an old-timer, I feel it's worth mentioning that Gary isn't saying, but it is very possible, that the same topics will be presented to us again, with instructions to write one we haven't written before. So if you write more than one of them, you may be smacking your forehead later.

That was what occurred to me immediately last night, since I really didn't like one of the topics!

Same here!
Dec. 11th, 2015 09:01 pm (UTC)
Yup. Seen it happen.

I was going to vote last night, but my realtor called and someone is coming to look at my house today, so I had to clean house instead. *hangs head in shame*

Also hi, I don't get to green room often, I just happen to be on break and thought I'd pop in for a bit. I have an idea for this week, but it's a fairly obvious response( to me) so I'm not sure.

I think you have a good excuse. Selling a house is enough stress as it is without voting on top of it. Hope it sells quickly!

I definitely noticed that we didn't have as many people voting as we normally do. Average amount of votes seemed to be hovering around 19-20, and that seems really low...

(Of course, falibility of the brain—could be that the average was higher, but it still felt low, especially compared to previous seasons, which could be due to the fact that as a miniseason, we have fewer people participating from the start. :))

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I think you combine the month we're starting plus a mini-season and numbers overall are going to be smaller.

Which makes it even more important to get the word out. We literally had someone going home this week over 1 vote.
Dec. 11th, 2015 07:11 pm (UTC)
which for those wondering is not a comfortable feeling, knowing you squeeked through or were cast out with one vote is pretty horrible.
Dec. 11th, 2015 08:14 pm (UTC)
To be fair, we often have just one or two votes making the difference in who stays and who goes!
Dec. 11th, 2015 07:23 pm (UTC)
And now for something completely random
There's a commercial that comes on a zillion times a day, for these adhesive poster-type things you can affix to your walls. One of the examples is a (I'm assuming) Disney princess, and this little girl with her little squeaky squealing voice runs to the princess and yells something that probably isn't "allahu akbar," but it sounds close enough that it's the only thing I come up with when I try to figure it out. (I don't speak squealing little girl.)

Any idea what she's actually saying? Anybody?

The thing that surprised me was that we have 99 people competing and, based on the Individual poll, only 83 people who voted. Humans, Sentient Universes and other beings of LJI, let us all go to our various social media platforms and encourage people to return to read, to vote and to offer the proper sacrifices to Gary (ie - snacks and concert tickets).
Dec. 12th, 2015 12:16 am (UTC)
I'm surprised by the numbers, too. But numbers always surprise me.

I don't think....and PLEASE correct me if I'm mistaken, that you can vote through any medium other than an LJ account. So, on other platforms, folks will need to have an LJ account.
Dec. 12th, 2015 12:33 am (UTC)
I believe at this point that you can vote through Twitter/Facebook/OpenID. :)
Dec. 12th, 2015 12:38 am (UTC)
Do you know how, Jenn?
Dec. 12th, 2015 12:44 am (UTC)
I wanted to verify, so I pulled up a silly (public) poll I posted in my journal ages back.

Click on "fill out poll" in a browser you are not logged into. It will give you the option to log into LJ, or to vote using one of a number of services.

This is what it shows me when I'm logged out and view "fill out poll". :)
Dec. 13th, 2015 01:07 am (UTC)
I need to investigate this! I only ever see a tallied poll when I log out. I don't see the option to vote.
Dec. 12th, 2015 12:32 am (UTC)
Some people likely didn't vote as they hadn't had a chance to read and didn't feel that it was fair (that seems to happen every time around, and I don't blame anyone for it!).

I personally feel weird linking Idol and real life together (Facebook), but that's mostly because no one in my "real life" knows I write. :)
Dec. 12th, 2015 01:42 am (UTC)
That's why I don't link them together either. I mean, there are a couple of RL people who know I write, but nobody knows I'm on LJ except for SO :)

"It shall be quite an endeavour as it is rare for sentient universes to interact with humans, but we shall try nonetheless."

"Yeah, that's because most sentient universes have sticks up their asses."

"Do not speak of our brethren that way!"

"Whatevs dude."

*Moves space rocks into a shape that's the universe equivalent of a sigh*

Two Minutes to Six My Time
Oh how I am hoping Gary's clock is not set faster than mine. My hands are shaking, my heart is jammed in at the back of my throat--at least I hope it's my heart--where it's pounding like the proverbial big bass drum.
