Green Room - Week 1 - Day 2

I've decided that I will not be posting any polls for this mini-season until CNN pays me $5 million.

That seems like a fair amount, and they can easily afford to do it.

***

Election season is always fun. I feel like Buffyverse monsters on Halloween - people who have don't pay much attention to politics any other time suddenly come out as experts. :)   If nothing else, it does make for some reading - and helps me keep in touch with how things are being intrepreted.  I can usually tell when FOX or MSNBC (insert source here) has made some big comment, based on how often I see the same sorts of comments popping up, and who they are from. :)

I appreciate the people out there who actually do some research and in particular those who check out "the other side",  to try to understand where the actual disagreements are and where the rheotric, from all sides, is just getting in the way.

For my money (all $5 million of it), being able to get into the head of people who don't share your beliefs, and realizing that they are (for the most part)  the "good guy" of their own narrative,  is a really good tool for a writer to have.

Bravo, sir! I agree, if folks could just get past the screaming, breaking dishes phase and into the calmer quieter conversation, we could have some real dialogue. Anti-intellectualism and knee-jerkism make for...boring exchange.

Exaggerated rhetoric aside, I have held onto my memory of video and reports of pockets of Americans celebrating that morning. It happened. I saw it reported live.

Which is interesting - because I was 24/7 on pretty much every news outlet I could find and I remember seeing celebrations but not in the US. (I specifically remember ones in the Gaza and Egypt, because my gut reaction was "there goes any pro-Palestinian state sentiments". They were building at the time in the US, and fell dramatically afterward) Given the state of panic and free-falling fear most of the outlets were in, you would think it would have gotten more traction.

I wonder how much was regional coverage rather than national.

As useful of a tool as the internet is - and how much information is out there, you would think that it would be easier to find. But I also know that as much of an information gathering tool the internet *can* be, that it's far more likely to end up twisted.

I hate election season, simply because it turns so many of my otherwise intelligent and thoughtful friends into the sort of people that froth and gibber and don't check their sources carefully, regardless of what side they're on. :/ Yes, I get that you think that [candidate] is the BEST EVER and [opponent] is THE LITERAL WORST—but at least three of the things that you're spouting as true are from the Borowitz Report. C'mon, get with it.

My candidate IS the best.

It's me.

I'm running for Supreme Ruler of the Universe, and will crush anyone who stands against me!

I have never learned anything from somebody that just nods their head and says ditto when I speak.
But I cannot carry on an intelligent conversation with somebody who refuses to consider that they might also need to listen to my viewpoint...

Honestly, I *love* politics.

I'm not into it as much as I used to be, but that's because a lot of the *fun* is gone.

So I watch the debates and post running quips about what is happening on my FB feed. (Not that many people notice or care) Not to talk about any of the actual issues, but about the process itself.

A 78-day election season doesn't seem like enough time to actually get to know someone... then again, you are electing parties. I don't like the idea of "voting straight party-ticket", so I'm really glad we don't have that.

Sometimes the best person for a particular job isn't in the same party as the person you want as President (or Prime Minister in your case) and I would hate to have to vote for someone I didn't want just to get someone that I did. (if that makes any sense)

Election years are sucky and it is frequently an on going thing.
Its not just electing the Presadent but then congressional members and we do not elect everybody at once.
When there isnt a rush of elect me political spots we get ones dealing with other issues.
Politics is a never ending diatrabe in the States.

Sometimes one just has to get up and leave.
Now, for lunch then i have diner prep as i am making enchiladas.

Both The Flash and Arrow are cheesy fun. Their universes are...interesting. I'm not a huge fan of either and I've never read the comics, so coming from me I guess is praise in that I don't dislike either? (I only end up watching both because SO has supreme control of the clicker those nights, grrr.)

That said, I've also caught quite a few SPN episodes. It's a show I've not gotten into but I evidently know enough about it that I'm not totally lost in watching it. I can see why it has a huge fandom!

Re politics in general: Most of the time I figuratively put my fingers in my ears and sing loudly to drown out all the talking points. It's difficult to do over at FB unless I want to block over half my feed.

I spend most of my election season time trying to determine who is really running for president and who is just trying to sell books and get future speaking engagements. My conclusion is only like four candidates (two from each party) are actually serious about running for president this year.

This one didn't seem so ordinary for me. I work at a center for people with developmental disabilities. It really hit home for my co-workers and I. This job is tough enough (I love it, though, don't get me wrong) without that kind of craziness. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.

Ordinary was for sure the wrong word... all too commonplace is what I more or less meant. It feels like every time you turn around, there's been another mass shooting in America. It's deplorable.

Late to the party, but I still showed up!

I used to really not be into politics at all. Then I got into tumblr and got involved in a group of tumblr friends who are all big on Social Justice. Social Justice Warriors, if you will. And I got sucked in. And now I have Opinions on things like gun violence and the presidential race and police brutality and LGBTQA+ inclusivity. And I routinely get into heated debates with people about them! Five years ago, I would never have been able to do that. It's an aspect of Adult Banyangirl that I'm really pleased with.

As far as SB, man, crap if I know what to do about it.
