Listening to all the power tools and hammering upstairs and thinking to myself, "This explains the sympathetic stress I get from watching home reno shows."

My friend's been annoying the shit out of me for nudes, and I'm on spring break and I'm kinda stoned so okay, whatever, I put on my favorite jockstrap and take some webcam screenshots. I decide she needs to see them RIGHT NOW so I message her at 3 AM and wake her up by accident. But because she was awake she heard her grandmother having trouble in the bathroom and called for an ambulance.

My ass has the power to sense danger and alert families during medical emergencies.

(It does not, however, have the power to sleep in during breaks so I got up at 8:30 this morning like usual. :( )

I'm sick. Again. It's unsurprising - I spent all last week taking care of Todd, who was sick with a head cold - but it's still frustrating.

On a more positive note, I got some unexpected hang-outs with a distant friend - she returned for the weekend (being overseas and also away from all your friends and your cats is hard) and that was super nice.

I'm currently reading Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. Anyone else read this series? I'm not sure yet what I think of it.

I went up the mountain for the first time in several months/close to a year. I also found out, thanks to a fellow hiker's trailbook, that the trail I prefer is officially called the Obama Trail since that's the place he hiked a couple of years ago.

That's not what the locals call it. We call it "you know that trail where Twisty-Turny Road meets the Parkway and there's that dirt road that goes off of it?" Not a concise title, I grant, but that's how most of the natives find it.

Heh. That sounds like a proper description for the Obama Trail. (Sorry, but I'm not a fan of his.)

I've been keeping busy. Today is my first day entering timesheets for my newly expanded grouping (up from 15 to 54 people) and of course that means checking everyone's math, reminding folks that 15 minutes = .25, not .15 and generally trying not to pull my hair out. But I'm on my lunch break right now, and all is Zen for the next 30 minutes or so...

OMmmmmm...

Talking with a friend about silly personality tests and such, it occurred to me it might be fun to have a kind of guessing game here in Idol-land.

What personality type do you think someone else is? We can use two different metrics, the Myers-Briggs thing (take the test here or many other places online), and the Enneagram Personality thingy (take that test here or here.

And if the guessing game sounds like too much work we can just say what types the tests turned up for us and gripe about over-simplified binary choices and such. ;)

You asked: prepare for rant
At my job, you will get a bad review and be subject to discipline, including dismissal, for merely doing your job. You will get a middling review and simply be denied any raise or bonus if you do the work of two people. If you want any kind of raise - less than cost of living, but maybe 1 or 2% - they expect you to be somewhere between Ben Franklin and Nikola Tesla. Shift paradigms, invent new patents (that you'll never see a penny of), invent new ways to perform entire job roles, land huge multi-million dollar contracts (note: I'm in Support, not Sales). At the very LEAST, travel internationally to train replacement Americans, who will work for 1/10th the pay. (And often 1/10th the output, but that's not a concern for this quarter.)

The thing that compounds this problem is that every year the goalposts are moved farther back. Last year's stretch goals are this year's basic job description.

This year was the most overt example I have ever seen. I had some serious contributions that only I did, which got me solid reviews a couple years back, and I knew what some of my colleagues were doing to get the same back-patting. This year, every single one of those things are baked right into our "mandatory business commitments" that we have to sign to start the year off.

Now I gotta go find yet a fourth person's job I can elbow in on. We're pitted against each other, see. Every year, a certain percentage of us MUST be given bad reviews, so I can only hope to survive by burying someone else. That'll keep the ship afloat another year.

So, having a great day. :(

Re: You asked: prepare for rant
:( That is all so exhausting and awful. I hope you've got your résumé up-to-date and have been looking around for positions that will be less ridiculous and stressful.
