Work Room - Week 32

You have had time to rest, but now we need to get back to the business of writing! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/820156.html

I hope you took advantage of the break to knock off a few of those cobwebs and find new inspiration.

Especially given that you have topics that everyone knew would be resurfacing at some point. So that's not even that big of a surprise!

It may be a shock that we would start going into "write two entries" in a week... unless you are a veteran and then you were expecting that as well!

For those wandering in, or who may have forgotten - the Work Room is the space for writers to bounce around ideas and help each other through potential road blocks! So, if you are experiencing any, this would be the place to talk it out!

First! Mwahaha!
Jan. 2nd, 2015 03:01 am (UTC)
I don't recall "the bystander effect" from the last time around...or the time before that...(says she who's not playing, but what the heck)

I may be the world record holder in bystandering. The effects ebb and flow. Sometimes frustrating, sometimes entertaining, sometimes curl up on the sofa and take a nap inducing.

eta - oh, heh. it's a topic.

::whistles innocently as if I knew that already::

Heheh... Methinks this might be a home game topic ;)

Given that:

(1) "Overwatch" from week 25 has been replaced by "the bystander effect," and
(2) I took a bye in week 20...

am I correct in concluding that my task is, essentially, "pick any two"?

Happy New Year!

Overwatch should have been on the list, and is now. That was an oversight. Thanks to everyone for pointing that out!

But yes, pick any two of the ones you haven't already completed.

Two? Man, I usually can't come up with an idea until about 11 AM on the day of the deadline. I wish that was an exaggeration. Though I promise you'll have to throw me out, I won't quit! (I mean, if I really can't come up with something I guess I could just write porn...)

according to my writing group, all roads lead to porn, so.... :D
Jan. 2nd, 2015 10:09 am (UTC)
...I had no idea they'd be resurfacing...
Jan. 2nd, 2015 10:11 am (UTC)
Hmm, I've done "Shibusa" and "Rapture of the deep", leaving me "captcha the flag", "Intersubjectivity" and "the bystander effect".

...I don't remember the bystander effect, but I do remember Overwatch. Hmmm.

*ponderponder* Oh look it's bedtime.

Overwatch being left off the list was an oversight that has been corrected.
Jan. 2nd, 2015 03:09 pm (UTC)
Is overwatch a thing other than a video game?
Jan. 2nd, 2015 04:36 pm (UTC)
I know nothing about video games, so the short answer is yes. It's a military tactic - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overwatch

Several Idol entries used this the first time through.

Which topics are you considering? Your "captcha" was so brill...that's a high water mark to reach for that topic.

Cool thanks :).

Thank you, you helped so much to get me to that place where I could write it, so it's kind of your fault ;).

I'm thinking about Intersubjectivity, I had an idea for it back then but I think I've forgotten the point of the story so I'll have to rework the idea. For the second one I'm considering either doing bystander effect or overwatch.

Which ones are you thinking of doing?
Jan. 2nd, 2015 05:05 pm (UTC)
As I combined Shibusa and Intersubjectivity....

Overwatch isn't striking me as anything other than military right now. I did wake up with an idea for "Captcha" that I think may work, capitalizing a bit on what you and I did with that. And I just LOVE the possibilities of Bystander Effect. Is that happening much in the UK? It's epidemic here. Even twenty years ago, the comedian Sam Kinison had a bit after the Rodney King video in which he simply said, hey, if you ever see my ass getting whupped, please put down the camera and help me. We are becoming Observers.

Captcha idea sounds cool.

I don't know how much it happens in the UK, but yeah, there does seem to be a thing about watching rather than helping. There's always the thing said: 'Don't say 'someone call 999' you have to point to a person and say 'you call 999''. It allocates responsibility, where it has a tendency to disperse with many present.

Fantastic comment. I read a study of the Bystander effect and how it works, and you advice is spot on. The more personalized your pleas for help, the more likely said help will be to respond. Unfortunately, my original idea of having a flock of children around me at all times seems to neither increase nor decrease the bystander effect. Worthless children.

So, as a newbie - two separate entries with two separate links posted...separately?

Anyone around for some brainstormy discussion?
Jan. 5th, 2015 11:08 pm (UTC)
Do need. I'm caught on either Rapture of the Deep or Intersubjectivity, and about ready to say "Hang it all," and go Interapture of the Deepjectivity.

How about you? What scenes are you seeing, what settings do you want to play with? Are you torn between fiction and non-fiction, or does one have carry your favor more right now?
Jan. 6th, 2015 01:12 am (UTC)
I need to choose from Intersubjectivity, Captcha the flag, bystander effect or Overwatch.

I actually came up with an idea for intersubjectivity, but it is turning out to be really really really long (though with lots of potential I think), so I don't know whether to a) trim it severely b) go with long c) make it a two-parter and make the second half tie into Overwatch (which it could easily do) or d) save it and write something else.

I find non-fiction heaps easier to write but am trying to avoid it!
Jan. 6th, 2015 09:25 pm (UTC)
(Raises hand quietly) I would go for the two part write, if it isn't too late. People may lose interest with long, and you could give the pieces better, balance? Plus have less worry that one is stronger than the other.

(Quietly leaves, while mumbling I can't wait to read either way ;)

Have just made the draft public if you want to do some beta reading!

(Will do the split when I'm happy it's finalised)
