Work Room - Week 30

Decisions, decisions. http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/811500.html

Do you go with the old familiar or take the risk writing something new?

How do you decide?

Should you write the new piece and decide what you like better? Should you make the decision right away?

There is definitely strategy involved in the decision, as well as some potential insight to be gained into the remaining competitors. :)

Or maybe not! I guess we will see.

***

Where is your brain at with the new topic, and what do you think you have to offer it that no one else can?

Ermigard. Wtf? BBQ

This is going to be very interesting. But twice the reading? Egad!

foist, indeed.

It's not *quite* twice the reading, if you read the entries when they were first posted. And the field is smaller so not as many entries. It'll probably wind up being similar to one of the teen or early twenty weeks.

Unless I absolutely hate what I come up with for the topic, I can't imagine resubmitting something that I'd already done for the poll. I'm generally open to constructive criticism anyway (so it's not fear of getting concrit on something that I've just turned out)—I'd just rather get that concrit on something that I've had a lot of time to mull over and think about what I may change when editing.

So...for me, it's a no-brainer, I guess. The real question is more "how much do I feel like participating in the Killing Floor?" I'm used to giving people constructive criticism, and I'm not really 'afraid' of doing it, but we're into the dark and cold part of the year and my brain has been taken over by anxiety weasels (hence why my posting/commenting has dropped a bit!), and overcoming that can be difficult.

I'm sort of hoping to wrestle them into submission and leave constructive comments on everyone's stuff, but we'll see. :)

I, for one, welcome your comments of any sort! It is indeed the season where the energy hump one has to get over for anything stretches like mad. I never used to recognize that in myself in winter, but I begin to these days. Cheers to you and hopes that the anxiety weasels go back to their warrens where they belong.

So when we decide on our favorite piece from this season to submit, are we allowed to edit it, or does it have to stay as-is?

Also, are we supposed to read and comment on all the KF pieces, or just do the topic reading as usual?

I was just about to ask the editing question too. I have had several good edit comments on different pieces, but I haven't yet gone back and made the changes.

I might be writing stupid, hilarious meta.

Post the new, concrit the old. After all the fuss earlier, it would take a lot more bravery than I have to resubmit a piece.

This is a good idea.

(So glad I do not have to post the old at all. ^_^)

This is brilliant, scary but brilliant.

I think posting something old to the topic thread could be a risk unto itself because of many reasons. Among which being a lot of previous posts were intricately linked with their respective topic of the week and it may be discombobulating. Also will they still hold up after this time, especially as people are constantly improving.

It will be interesting to see how many people choose to post an old piece and how many a new piece to the topic thread.

Basically all we need to do is write something that's as good as our best entry, that should be easy :/

you know, when i was wondering how many people would resubmit something for the poll, it completely slipped my mind that the already-submitted story would still have to fit the prompt. >.< like, i forgot there even was a prompt. oy, self.

Well, I've figured out what I want to do, but it's a little lofty. (And slightly meta. But it should give everyone a bit of what they want.) So we'll see how this goes. I think the harder part will be picking out a "favorite" for the Killing Floor. (Part of me is tempted to pick up an entire serial and say, "Tell me what is and isn't working here," but I'm pretty sure the Killing Floor would live up to its name then!)

The actual prompt itself ... well, there's the obvious interpretation, then there's playing on the word "hit" (a pop song released at just the right time?), then there's playing on the word "critical" (how much explication went into that hit?). Then there's going the opposite direction, a hit that never landed (it was critical and it didn't happen), or perhaps it was critical that it *never* connected ...

I was also thinking of a work that was critically acclaimed - something that was a hit with critics, and maybe fell flat with consumers...

Hmmmm this is a tricky one. But it's also fun, because especially at the start I guess a lot of people just never had the chance to read everything? I know I didn't.

And how do I resist the urge to do a crossover with myself?

And which one is my favorite piece? I actually have a few I like this time around, but a lot of them are so very recent that it feels weird to just redo the prompt this soon.

Too many thoughts.

My favorite piece I've written turned out to be the most recent, so re-entering it would feel too redundant. I'm actually kind of worried about the way I want to continue it, since everyone just read about this world and characters. At the same time, I really want to expand on it and this is a great opportunity to see how it goes, so I'm thinking I'll try giving the Grown Gaunt his backstory and pray to the writing gods it's not a dull subject the second week.

Gary,

does this mean that everyone (of the contestants) who will be bothered to write ConCrit on ONE entry gets the power of veto this week?
clauderainsrm
Dec. 3rd, 2014 05:01 pm (UTC)
Power of Veto is a specific thing. No one is getting that.

If you mean - "Are people going to be able to cast a vote for immunity", you're right, I didn't answer that. :)

Agh, man, this is gonna be a bit out of my comfort zone, because I never write sequels to Idol stories. I usually encapsulate the idea or setting I wanna showcase in one go, say what I want to say, and coming up with another angle is going to be like being the poor Hollywood writer tasked with writing a sequel to a movie that was never intended to have one.

I'm kinda looking forward to it though, because this is what Idol has always been about, really - grabbing you by the hair and MAKING you become a better writer.

There is a competition, but there is no prize at the end, because the winner has been you all along. ;)

Dec. 3rd, 2014 05:39 pm (UTC)
But... we don't have to do a sequel, do we? Because oh god, I don't think I could. We just need to link our favorites, and then do something for this week's prompt - and put one or the other in the killing floor and the topic thread. I think? Maybe I'm confused...

Aaaaaaaaargh decisions. I suck at decisions. I not only have to decide on a favorite thing (I mean, really. I have five different 'favorite' flavors of ICE CREAM), but also decide what thing to put in what place? I think I will be dithering ALL the dithers.

I have no idea what to write for this prompt yet. I'm still working on it... I do a LOT of tabletop gaming and playing RPGs, so that's where my mind went right away, but, well... eh... no need to stay there necessarily.

I need professional help on punctuation and such...
Hey peeps,

I just wrote a piece I'd like to submit as an editorial to my local paper... can I have some feedback...

It was brought on by today's Eric Garner verdict.
