Green Room - Week 28 - Day 1

"By the Numbers" - because I know there are definitely some folks here that enjoy an assortment of facts:

I've tried something a little different the last couple weeks when it comes to voting. I've been trying to raise some awareness of the fantastic writing that is happening here.

The first week I tried advertising through Livejournal itself. Virtually no response and there isn't really a report to measure the numbers.

So the following week(s) I've gone with Facebook, to see what the difference was.

Per Facebook, the voting post reached the "eyes" of 1,244 people. I use quotes because that just means that they scrolled past it while they were on their phone or computer. Of those people, *26* of them clicked through to the link.

Of those, 3 of them are now following LJ Idol on FB.

How many of them actually voted? There were a total of *6* votes from Facebook, and most of those were names that I'd seen before. (Note: none of the "new followers" actually voted)

(Note: There were also 2 votes from Google+ and 2 votes from Twitter - in other words, there were 10 votes cast from non-LJ accounts. Out of 137!)

I know that building up a name is something that happens slowly and through repetition. But when I saw that icon on poll say that it had been shared on FB "69 times", I was expecting a bigger bang than that! (It went from 11 normally, to 47 to 69 in the weeks where there has been advertising, which means that the LJ "FB shares" thing might be adding some numbers to the count based on FB's repostings)

The good news in all of that - there seems to be only 2 people (and the second one is a "maybe") who "double voted" (used more than one account), and it didn't impact anything. That's always a concern, which is why I keep an eye on it. (I'll be talking to them later, I'm sure it was an oversight)

Ultimately, what this means is the best form of promotion is still word of mouth. If you love what you are seeing here: TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT IT. Get them to show up and get to read, and support, some really talented new writers!

(Sure, they might originally come just to support you, but if they are reading, they are bound to find some other great folks as well!)

***

More numbers, because of the tie, we are now at 51 contestants. So we're hanging on the edge of that Top 50.

Which means this week is *the* last time to use your byes and the last chance for the Power of Veto to be used.

There appear to be 11 people remaining who still have one to use, and one person with two!

***

Just went through and updated the "approximate number of LJ Idol entries" figure. These are entries that were created for LJ Idol: 19,639. Not bad. I wonder who is going to end up writing #20,000???

FRIST?? Everybody must be in the Work Room, heheheheheh! :)

That's sort of cool about the numbers, and I'm glad we still have this week to use our Byes if necessary.

I wasn't in the "Work Room"
I was working.

Some of us actually have to work for a living.

PS: what does this mean... "frist?"

I'll tell you what it means:

it means YOU'RE DEAD TO ME!

thank you. i needed that after getting voted out.

...we can still use byes?

dang. Might have to use that last one, assuming that Hatch Weekend leaves me too hungover to successfully write. o.o

Yes, you can.

I was planning on them being gone this week. But that's not what the voters decided to do! :)

Only 10 votes of 137 were cast from accounts other than LJ.

But 36 votes out of 137 were single votes, cast for just one person.

That percentage has been relatively stable the past few weeks, believe it or not.

Whoever hits the 20-grand GET should get some kind of special power. Or at least an icon or something to commemorate the occasion. :)

Depends on how many are eliminated and/or drop; with fifty-one, we could hit that in a little over seven weeks (so early in the eighth week). At two lost per week, it'd be about nine weeks, if I'm doing the math right. At five lost per week, we'd run out of contestants before we hit it.

I see people on FB post links to the poll and ask for votes -- it's nowhere near the frenzied pimping that used to go on here but I guess you'd call it quietly pimping? Once in a while somebody will reply, but otherwise it looks like most people scroll right on by.

I've never posted a link for myself because, as always, I don't want people I know IRL who don't know I write to follow me here.

Oh, and I now have a nifty arm cast for the next month! I was walking around with a fractured wrist which my ortho doc apparently missed. The hand surgeon was the one who picked up on it. Whether I'm going to need surgery or not remains to be seen.

Um, yeah.

" Once in a while somebody will reply, but otherwise it looks like most people scroll right on by."

Yeah, that's been my experience with the links that I've seen as well.

Also - just because someone says they voted, that doesn't always mean that they did. :)

As I said a few weeks ago, we are now at another "breaking point", where people are going to be tempted to go off the reservation and lose focus on why they are actually here.

Hopefully, everyone keeps their heads on straight, and together, everyone works to minimize the explosions. :)

It's beyond me why people are so focused on who gets how many votes at what time. Then again, I know there are many people who don't understand why anyone would participate in an LJ Idol alliance, and I've done that in the past. To everything, turn, turn, turn, blah blah blah.

Now I sort of feel like been there, done that - here for the friends and the writing. If I'm eliminated tomorrow, whatevs. :)

People are going to focus on different things, and "play" in different ways.

From the perch in my lair, it's always interesting to see who is going to be focused where, and how it ends up impacting the other moving pieces around them.

This season is now longer than Season 5.

I want to issue an apology. I really feel like I haven't been doing anything right, partially because I'm overworked these days. I thought I was getting a week off and, as it turned out, I had to work more hours than usual, so I didn't even read or vote, and I didn't even post to my own LJ about how miserable I've been.

Not that the universe revolves around me or anything...

I'm sorry. I feel like I'm missing out and I don't wanna.

I'm confused. You're injured and haven't been playing lately.

I would think you would have *more* time to read and vote. Or have the medical team been pushing you in physical rehab?

I'm guessing my sister was one of the FB voters. She definitely didn't vote, because she never uses her LJ any more and couldn't remember the password!

I think that perhaps a lot of people aren't aware that you CAN log in and vote via Facebook.

Also, about Facebook ads: I've paid for them and had plenty of views and clicks but never made a sale of a book as a result. This despite the fact that I used their targeting options.

I can't confirm individual voters - and besides voting from FB is something that LJ decided was fine. Which means, it's fine.

The only bad thing would be if someone voted using more than one account.

There is a FB group called "LJ Refugees" that's active from time to time.

Probably other members of the great LJ diaspora disbursed hither and thither on FB as well.

The problem is that LJ is just not considered a particular viable social media platform anymore for one reason or another.

And the name of this particular contest is Inclusivity -- one of the things I really like about it by the way -- so you can't really package the five "best" entries and try to peddle them somewhere as a means of drumming up interest.

I wonder what "sponsorship" would look like in LJ or LJ Idol terms?

(I am still a prolific LJ poster -- many would say too prolific :-) , and I entered LJ Idol in the hopes of finding people I could add to my LJ flist so I'd have something to read over coffee. The attrition rate on my long-time flist is so alarming that I can now finish that list in half a cup! This is having a deleterious effect on the coffee roasting industry as a whole. :-) )

"There is a FB group called "LJ Refugees" that's active from time to time."

I'm a member of it.

"Probably other members of the great LJ diaspora disbursed hither and thither on FB as well." I'm a member of some of those as well. I try not to spam Idol too much, but I have brought it up a few times, hoping to drum up some interest in dragging them back into the fold.

They care enough about LJ to belong to a group about it, but do they care enough to come back? That's the question!

"The problem is that LJ is just not considered a particular viable social media platform anymore for one reason or another."

Which is a shame, because I think it still offers the *best* way to express yourself on social media. It's just that the online culture seems to be moving to consuming more data using fewer words.

"so you can't really package the five "best" entries and try to peddle them somewhere as a means of drumming up interest."

Exactly. Which is why the selling point tends to be: "AWESOME STUFF TO READ! COME CHECK US OUT!" kind of thing. :)

"The attrition rate on my long-time flist is so alarming that I can now finish that list in half a cup! This is having a deleterious effect on the coffee roasting industry as a whole. :-) )"

Seriously!!

Which is why I would love to get more attention for Idol - there's a reason we are one of the top non-ONTD communities left! :)
