Work Room - Week 24

The new topic is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/788789.html

and I can't wait until people start googling and linking it back.

Because I have a feeling this is going to be a fun week!

But it's also a week where people are likely to have similar entries. What are you going to do to make yourself stand out from the crowd?

I wanted to suggest this for a topic;

But then I read a little further and was like no Hitler no.

My exact reaction to the topic:

Wtf is this topic
(Ten seconds of googling)
Oh Lololol

And I have no idea how I'm gonna stand out amongst the crowd, but I definitely see this as a similar approach week across the board. :)

Now to sleep on this topic.

That was my reaction. What is this madness?!

I think there are a lot of places to go with this. Underlying the prompt is the concept of being misunderstood and of how language is strange.

I kinda know what I want to do but it's weird and dystopia-y and has large dead fish. >_>

Yeah, I can't decide if this topic would be really fun or really annoying to write (and then read 50 other entries about). Although I guess I'll be doing the reading part anyway. XD

Dang it. I can see how this would totally be a fun week, but I already did the "my autocorrect hates me!" post! Guess I'll have to take a different tack. (No tin foil hats for me this week.)
Oct. 7th, 2014 02:55 am (UTC)
As long as I stay away from "damn you autocorrect" stories, I think I'll be fine. (And its converse, "damn you always-correct.") Maybe taking it at less of a face value and spinning it off into misspellings leading to misunderstandings.

Of course, I expect I'll have all of 15 minutes to write an entry this week (down from last week's 20 minutes), so I'll be lucky if any word in the entry is spelled correctly.

Which would be pretty mean, writing an entry where every single word was deliberately misspelled. I can hear pedants whimpering already!
Oct. 7th, 2014 04:49 am (UTC)
It would only work with some deliberate misspellings, but beware of looking ridiculous if you miss some real ones besides ;-)

Can I just kvetch about the Monday-Thursday schedule for a minute? It's rough, Gare. You're giving LCI the more forgiving schedule!!

Hear, hear! I miss having the weekend to write.

You want us to write about what? *looks at it*

Oct. 7th, 2014 03:13 am (UTC)
When I first saw the topic I thought it meant something else entirely, and well, I may go with my misapprehension; it means I'll stand out, though possibly not in a good way.

I thought it was an astronomical thing. I like my original misconception better.

:( Yargh.

I much prefer more open-ended topics, and it feels like we've had a shortage of them this season!

::nods quietly::

because far be it from me to say anything about sucky topics

Lord, the things we do for you Gary! ;)

This does seem like a fun topic in its own way... hopefully I'll think of something! I do still have a cute "Cupertino" saved on my phone, from a text between myself and my housemate. It might inspire me to something, we'll see.

First, two autocorrect pearls from my Android tablet:

And to Andy's

I to Omniscent

(it absolutely hates one-letter words in general and keeps replacing them with trash, but this was priceless).

Whaaaaaat is this topic :P

The Cupertino effect is the tendency of a spell checker to suggest or autocorrect with incorrect words to replace misspelled words and words not in its dictionary.

This term refers to the unhyphenated English word "cooperation" often being changed to "Cupertino" by older spellcheckers with dictionaries containing only the hyphenated variant, "co-operation".[1] Cupertino is notable for being the home of Apple Inc.

In my youth I was a bit of a prankster, and recently I considered posting on Facebook all day long and allowing all of the autocorrect mistakes to stand, unexplained. I didn't do it, though, because I was too busy being, like, a responsible mom and stuff.

LMAO...and now what do I do with this topic..hehehe...wicked..
