Work Room - Week 22

The new topic is up: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/782025.html

With the numbers in the competition dwindling - that increases the attention that each entry is going to receive. The spotlight is able to hone in tighter and tighter.

Does your strategy for writing change? What have you seen people doing over the last few weeks that you have really liked, and want to try to incorporate into your own practices?

Did anyone end up bouncing ideas off the Intersection partner on a *non*-Intersection week?

It just gets tougher every week! I don't think my strategy for writing changes any - I still do a ridiculous amount of research, but I really enjoy it. I think as long as we enjoy the writing process, the readers will respond to it.

At least, I hope so!

(Also, FIRST!)

My strategy doesn't change any, and I have a "writing partner" who I bounce ideas off of. AS my ongoing story gets tighter though, it's harder to pick and choose bits that are important to the story and still match the topic. I'm actually thinking that some of my ideas will be more color/mental background for when I put this all together and flesh it out.

I must say, my LJIdol rhythm is just ... off.

At first I was glad to have extra time for the last poll, but then, because I am apparently unable to do more than one Idol task at a time, it meant we had two days to read and vote this week, and now we're back to having a whole week before our entries are due? (Today was Thursday, right?)

I honestly can't get my footing. I feel kind of like I've been fighting the current all season, so the only strategy I might come up with is to try to figure how the fuque to fix that.

In other news, wasn't someone recently talking about watching Karate Kid?

Coincidence?

Well, it's our own fault for wanting more time with Week 20, that we had a squished time in 21. But it is what it is. Yes, today is Thursday. I'm glad we have a whole week - phew!

Fortunately, I like the Karate Kid (and Ralph Macchio) so I got the reference pretty easily. Now to just figure out what to do with it...

My strategy? "Put him in a body bag!"

Actually, no strategy per se. Just keep it fresh and keep it fascinating. Everyone left is ridiculously talented, so an A game is mandatory. I do need to work on my "soft" game if I want to reach Top 50, though.

I've never been good at strategy. I don't really expect to win, either.

But FWIW, in my parlance there is a huge difference between "losing" and "not winning."

I bounce an occasional idea off of my hubby (see icon) and two or three trusted co-workers (who don't have LJ accounts).

Sometimes my hubby will give me an off-the-wall idea, and I'll initially think "Naaaaah...." but then it percolates and I'm all like, "You know, with a little tweaking that just might work..." LOL.

Wait until the last day' panic helps

Research enough to understand the reference, even if the topic seems obvious because it often has second meanings I miss. Then free-write the hell of it on the metro on my way to and from work, to get a feel of it and get as many ideas as possible until one just 'clicks'. Which is why Idol weeks starting on Thursday are not ideal for me, I only get several 'creative rides' in.

But that's not really winning strategy, that's writing strategy. As for the other, I don't have one, I have already and quite bewilderingly lasted more than twice longer than in any previous season. The only thing that's different this time is that I'm determined to hang on as long as possible where I've byed-out in both Seasons 7 and 8.

No strategy. Like others have mentioned, I tend to thoroughly research first so I can gather ideas on approaches to the topic or so I can see if an idea will actually fit some form of the topic. Possible ideas get tossed at the whole family; at least one entry developed from a suggestion my twins gave me.

Dorie and Dee proofread HTML and actual writing for me.

I write for the joy of doing so and --- perhaps --- being able to communicate that joy to someone else. If I make a reader smile or think or look at the world differently, it's an added benefit.

So the first thoughts that pop to mind after sorting out the reference:

-misplaced trust (and subsequent growing up);
-manipulation and the Slytherin 'any means to achieve your ends';
-callousness.

For those like me who've never seen Karate Kid and don't get the reference, Urban Dictionary to the rescue!

To show no mercy or compassion, kicking someone while they're down.

When you do whatever you have to do to win, short of cheating, but playing dirty.

This derives from the final fight of "Karate Kid" where the main character's leg is broken and the evil Sensai instructs his student to "Sweep the leg" out from under him to win.

I may actually have an idea for this. This might actually for once work with the story going on inside my head. Or I could just need to go back to sleep.

See ryl's comment above. Basically, the way I interpret it is doing or being told to do something illegal/wrong in order to get ahead. Lots of fodder there, especially with some of your stories!

I have a wonderful writing partner - shoutout kathrynrose - and we pretty much talk about everything we're writing all the time, including Idol entries.

My strategy right now is to carve out minutes here and there to think about what the heck to write, and to spend all day Sunday reading as many entries as I can since I'm pretty unhappy with my lack of reading and commenting lately. Not fair, not in the spirit, and I'd yell at me if I was me.

Now I'm going to try and edit some pages and then go teach circus to 84 children.

Whee!!!!

It's interesting to talk about "strategy" when it comes to any of this.

I'm of the school that says if you're worrying about a strategy to stay in the game, you probably don't have enough confidence in what you're doing and should get back to working on your story skills.

What would a strategy even be? Because all you can control is what you are writing. Everyone else is going to do their pieces their way. So maybe the strategy is write the best story you can and hope everyone else likes it.

Okay. I guess I DO have a strategy.

Just an FYI - some people are more prone, when under a time crunch, to read and vote on entries for those people that they know have read their entries - which they know because those people have left comments on the entry.

So if you read an entry, leave a comment when possible. It might help save your metaphorical life at some point in the game, because that ONE VOTE can make all the difference.

There are a handful of people still in the game, whose entries I read every week or nearly every week, and leave a comment on their entries, but I have yet to receive a comment from them on ANY entry of mine. This leads to bad juju. (I'm not talking about you, FYI)

I don't know that I have a strategy. I just mull over the topic, and then typically something happens that relates or reminds me of something that relates to it, then I sit down and write all in one go. I start and finish and post in one sitting. Maybe that's a strategy? A writing strategy, not a winning strategy. I've never won, and I don't have one of those!

Sweep the Leg-

1.) Literally kick the leg out from under somebody, especially a pre-injured leg.
2.) Metaphorically destroy someone by attacking their weak spots, mentally or physically. Equated to "kicking someone when they're down," except that the emphasis on getting them down.
3.) Sweeping the leg- maybe you work in a department store and your soul function is to clean mannequins. Come to find that the mannequins all reenact scenes from Karate Kid at night.
4.) Sweep with the leg- a powerful martial artist uses kicks and a dustpan to clean his/her kitchen.
5.) Sweep the leg- a counter-terrorism unit patrols Italy in search of hostile elements. (Because it looks like a boot.)
6.) Sweep the leg- a promiscuous businessman makes an unwanted advance at the bar on karaoke night.
7.) Sweepy leg- a young woman suffers from a very unique form of restless leg syndrome.
8.) Sweep, the leg- An unusually named assistant brings body parts to an especially dysfunctional modern Frankenstein.
9.) Leg, sweep the- floor. Please, it's your turn.
