The first couple weeks of bye-outs are always the saddest for me. Because there are always really talented writers, who signed up with the best of intentions. But they end up bye-ing out before they get the chance to show folks what they can do.
There are legends in this ground - a winner of a previous season is in this group! A talented poet that I personally recruited to be a part of this, because I wanted folks to be exposed to his work. My former editor, who taught me a great deal of the lessons that I have tried to make a part of the very structure of Idol… she is also gone…. Some old friends. Some promising newbies… and some folks that I just don’t know what they would have been had their lives and schedules synced up just a little better.
I’ve seen newbies go from being in the first couple of bye-outs to come back in another season go on to recurring spots in the Top 10. So, sometimes it really is just a twist of fate that can take you out.
I am going to miss all of those wonderful entries that we are not going to be able to see. (Unless they take advantage of Second Chances later this season and fight their way back into the fray. I really hope that they will!)
And there is one more to add to that list. A drop.
Someone who realized that they didn’t have the time, and had to pull the plug on what could have been a lengthy run. We are definitely going to be losing out on some great stories. But, alas, we must also say goodbye to fading_light.
The goodbyes haven’t quite finished yet though, because this week there will be eliminations….
But let’s talk about the positive for a moment though. Because when there is a mass bye-out there or a lot of byes in general (this week we have both), there tends to be the conversation of “that’s a lot of people not writing”. But let’s look at the ones who ARE. There are about 80 entries for you to read. (Note: approximately. I'm sure someone will end up counting it. It doesn't matter though, my point stands.)
Roughly 80 new creations out there in the universe because these people showed up, and put something out. They fought. They created. They wrote. For YOU to read.
That is worth noting. That is worth celebrating. Both of the work itself and the people who are giving it to you. To me. To all of us.
So get out there - read, comment and VOTE for your favorites! You can cast votes for as many as you feel like supporting. Then, once you do that - tell your friends! Spread the word! Make sure that these words that folks are putting out there are being read and appreciated. Because they are worth reading. Because they matter.
We will be eliminating the bottom vote-getter from each poll (two total contestants being eliminated), because that’s what we do, so it’s important that you take the time to cast votes for people you are enjoying and want to see more from. Because that’s how that ends up happening! :)
