Green Room - Sign Up Week - Day 5

I've had a couple people ask me how long that sign ups were going to be open. So I guess I should make it official and close it off on Friday September 13th! Which may be an omen there. :)

Sign-ups have been slow, but steady, so please help spread the word! https://therealljidol.livejournal.com/1060711.html

This is a good time to gear up, get to know people and get in the habit of checking back here for announcements. I like to start slow to give folks the chance to breathe, because toward the end it can get pretty crazy! :)

I may post a Week 0 Topic to keep you occupied. But not today.

Today is for me asking you what you like to do "for fun"?

(other than to be tortured, that's obvious.)

I think a week 0 topic would be excellent practice, I see lots of people trying to figure out how to post links / pics / lj-cuts and trying to get back on the horse in general here. Including me! :D

For fun I do a whole lot of things sporadically and poorly! Recently that's been a bit of 3D printing, video game playing and live streaming, programming (I got a 3D depth camera and positional tracking unit I'm trying to combine with a thermal camera for the ultimate ghost hunting camera!), chainmaille, and napping.

I'm not even pretending writing's been on that list recently, but we're working on that :D

I'd ask what YOU like to do for fun, but with all the hippies in the world nowadays, is there time for anything other than kicking?

Kicking hippies DOES take up most of my time.

But when I can relax, if I'm being honest, I'm watching TV. :)

I should say "going on adventures!" I wish that was true. I need to do more of that.

What do I like to do for fun? I’m trying to figure that out again. For so long, my life was just work and nothing else. I wrote for work and lately stopped enjoying it. Which is why I’m here. For awhile, it was simply silly mobile games, but I need something more. When I’m home, I’ve been trying to get out more - go places, explore my town a bit. That sorta thing. But I don’t really do much for me anymore and I’d like to change that.

I found myself playing mobile games for fun/de-stressing and I pushed myself to get out of that habit. It worked but you have to actively add something else instead!

My biggest "fun" hobby is crocheting. I do it almost every single day for some amount of time. I also recently got into cross stitching. I do enjoy going to the movies, especially if I can get an opportunity to go sans children. I also like to read, but I haven't had much of an opportunity because I have been working on cross stitch and crochet projects for gifts lately and that's taken up my free time.

Crocheting is something I'd like to learn, properly. I have a sort of remembered/made-up method I use on occasion, but I'd love to actually learn the right way. I'm a knitter with a huge queue right now, but as soon as I get through that, learning to crochet is next on my list. :-)

I try to have fun no matter where I am. It's a bit tricky at work but I make the best of it! I go to as many live music events that I can. I read voraciously. I recently have been learning to knit using a loom which has been lots of fun. Yoga and fitness round out the fun things. It's good to be back!

Fun?!? What's that? Seriously, I've been spending loads of time outside with Chloe. Her second "gotcha" anniversary just happens to be on both Gary's and SO's birthdays 😊 We lost Max the husky not unexpectedly back in April. Even though he was too old and creaky to play with Chloe he was company for her and she definitely misses having another dog to watch over.

Just as "leaving this here for comparison". Before I posted the Sign Up Sheet, Idol was something like #356 in community rankings. Today we are #82. We've barely gotten started. There was a point where we were the only non-ONTD related group in the Top 10. I think we may get into that neighborhood again.

Which is less about us and more about the state of LJ.

At the moment I don't have much time for fun, I'm too busy keeping my head above water and trying to figure out how to protect myself and my kids. But when I am able to have time for fun, I like to travel, spend time with friends, perform improv on stage, and play all kinds of games with my kids (board games, card games, video games, improv games). Also going out to watch shows, movies, and musicians I like (in the next 8 days I have tickets to see Elton John and Avril Lavigne).

I’m sorry that you don’t have the time for fun right now. I don’t know your situation but I agree protecting yourself and kids is a top priority. Hopefully everything goes smoothly for you.

I'd love to have a "trial" topic (that is what week 0 is, right?). Since the only thing I know about Idol is that a few friends participated and I maybe read through 10-20 entries in all, it would be great to get a bit of an idea how this works.

Fun for me is, and always has been, reading. That is the single activity which never gets boring, does not stress me and does not require socializing, like other things I like to do but that rapidly become not-fun-any-more because they involve having to deal with lots of people in the 3D :D

Sep. 9th, 2019 05:27 pm (UTC)
Yeah. Week 0 is trial run, for all of us. I put up the topic so you can see how that works. You practice on deadlines and linking your entry. I make sure that the poll is actually working. :)

It helps get *some* of the kinks out of the system before the votes start counting, and gives folks a chance to get their legs under them.

Friday the 13th is always a lucky day for me.

I explore local parks and forest preserves for fun, and sometimes I strum a ukulele. I want to be good at it, but it is just something I pick up now and again. Sometimes I will paint with water colors. Does anyone else struggle with the intrusive idea that any hobby or creative endeavor should be monetized? Like, of course, doing things you enjoy and getting compensated financially for them so you can continue doing them and eat and not do the job you actually have that you do not like doing all sounds great. It's difficult for me to get past that perfectionist thinking: Not only must I be good at this, but I also must make money doing this, or else I don't deserve to be able to do this thing I enjoy. Capitalism is wild, and toxic.

It says "anonymous" so I'm not sure who you are, but I hope you see this! This article helped me a lot when I was like "why do I want to monetize everything?" and I realized it's toooootally not just me - it's actually a huge thing nowadays that people expect that. It's ok to let go of those expectations and just enjoy things:

Fun...tries to remember... I work a lot, so fun isn't on the menu for as many hours as I'd like. I tend to start hobbies and don't finish them. I'm also compulsively entrepreneurial, so i start businesses and don't finish them either. I like new projects more than maintaining old ones. Also I watch WAY too much TV, dote on my ridiculous cats, and drink a lot of coffee.

“Compulsively entrepreneurial” is a great way to describe myself as well. I’m constantly coming up with ideas, wanting to start businesses and jumping in, only to not finish them.

Cheat sheet?
A trial would be great. Trying to remember all the shortcuts, links, pics, etc. takes a bit of time. I'm wondering if anyone has a cheat sheet?

Hello!

I'm the scariest person here. So I figured I'd go first. ;)

If it turns out to be as good as the version of this season that is in my head, I think people will have a good time. That's always the hope anyway!

For fun I love to travel, play lots of games on my iPhone (if anyone here does Lexulous or Words with Friends, let me know), play with my cats, and go to the movies. I also watch far too much TV, lol!
