Vote - Week 29

The Portfolio Challenge is a special kind of week.

I figured it deserved a special kind of voting.

The entries for the Top 5 can be found here:

It's a collection of 4 pieces each that will be used to help determine who gets one step closer to being the winner of LJ Idol Season 10!!

They really put in a lot of work for these entries, and I think the voters should honor that by putting in some work of their own.

So here's the deal - voting is open to ANYONE. You don't have to even have a LJ account to vote. You just have to be able to send me an email.

BUT, and you knew there was a catch... I want 6 votes. No more. No less.

I want your favorite entries FROM EACH COMPETITOR! Then 1 vote that is "Best Overall".

These will be used to determine which contestant we are losing this week.

Good luck to you all!

The deadline to send your emails to me at clauderainsrm@gmail.com is Monday, Sept 4th at 7pm EDT.

I may be dense because of this illness that hit me like a catapulting mountain,  but I guess I am unsure how the tallying works in this scenario.

I thought the portfolio aspect of this week's entry represented one's best work as a collection. I chose my "best" piece of the season based on rounding out the field. Hmmmm....

Yeah, honestly, I wish I had made the "Best" reviewing how well things held together as a whole. But I didn't.

Chalk that up in my notebook for the future...

I was aiming for the same thing but backwards! I used the prompts - as in, trying to give a range of the sort of entries I have shared this season. I actually chose the 'Best" one first and went from there!

Oh, and *chicken soup* I had a weird summer cold last weekend and ugh. Hydrate!

I've received a few questions on this.

I have managed to explain it in email, so let's see if I can get it across out here in public. ;)

I wasn't going to go into the mechanics, because I like being mysterious. But I figure folks should have an idea what's going on. :)

People are voting for 1 entry from each contestant. These are going to end up being ranked. (since everyone has the same numbers)> Folks tend to like different stuff, so in theory, the votes should end up all over the place within your four entries.

Someone *could* in theory, have only 1 entry that people really liked and all the votes go there... whereas others might have entries that are equally popular. Those with spread out votes are going to be in better shape, because they won't have 3 entries listed on the bottom - because the person with the entries that have received the least amount of votes is going to be eliminated.

My thinking behind this is to make sure someone can't just post a "Vote for Entry 4!!!" and stack the votes in one place. Someone *could* still do that, but it would require a lot more work, and people being people, probably wouldn't end up working out the way anyone planned. :)

The "Best entry" is there for a extra point/tie-breaker.

So, the contestant who receives the most votes for "Best Entry Inspired By Another Player" wins the first spot, the contestant who gets the most votes on their entry for Category 2 wins the next spot (assuming it is someone different) and so on?

Think of them as entries in a poll. Each of them are getting votes.

The ones at the bottom are going to get eliminated.

The only twist is that it matters how many entries someone has at the bottom.

Sorry for the personal denseness. Sooooooooooooooooo....you really only want 5 votes but an emphasis on one of the five as THE BEST one????
Aug. 29th, 2017 08:31 pm (UTC)
You can certainly vote that way. Or you can strategically place the 6th vote where you think it will do the most good.

I am glad it is just not me. I'm still confused.

Hopefully the fruit thing in yesterday's GR helped!

I have to admit, this explanation very much made me a lot more confused and concerned about the voting for this week.

Wait, favorite entries from each COMPETITOR and not each challenge portion of the portfolio? WHAT?

I don't see how that is useful, in voting. Basically, the Best Overall is the only vote that counts.

Is that best writer? Best of the stories you picked as favorite?

This would seem to give us only one "yes" vote, rather than as many yeses as we want, up to and including five.

Your choices for which entries to vote for will VERY MUCH make an impact. Not just the last "Favorite Entry".

For that, you can vote for any of them. It doesn't matter if you've voted for them already - or maybe you want to throw in a wild card of a sentimental favorite. The more the votes are spread around the *better*. As long as they aren't *too few* votes being spread around... it's a narrow path to walk.

So based on what was said in the voting entry in the original post, here's how I thought the voting would go.

you have six votes to give. You vote for the single entry from each of the five writers that you felt was best. Then you vote for the best overall.

There was no suggestion that the "best overall" vote would carry any more weight than any of the previous five votes.

Now, we see that voting for particular pieces helps them stay afloat in the competition and is likely better than just votes for one piece.

What wasn't made clear was the "steeplechase" element of the voting, where lowest voted pieces fall to the bottom of the tally and are cut.

The truth of the matter is that it doesn't much matter, which is why I'm not asking for an explanation. It really doesn't affect anything, in a way, because there's no way of knowing which pieces voters will choose. It's really a hurdles race in the dark, but all of the writers are in the exact same circumstance, so, it doesn't much matter. The only thing that matters is a larger turnout for everyone.
