Green Room - Week 26 - Day 4

Yesterday was full of running around to the doctor, the dentist and trying to stay out of the way of a tropical storm that popped up out of nowhere*.

(*to be fair, it was a tropical depression that was giving us rain for a couple days, but literally "not on most people's radar.)

Today is full of waiting for your entries: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/1035875.html since today is the deadline!

What have YOU been up to?

My FB feed exploded with Sarahah yesterday. It's an app where you can leave anonymous comments about others (I told a FB friend that it reminds me of the slam books we had in high school where you wrote anonymous comments about your classmates). The utter horror expressed that such an app would exist coupled with the triggering of long past LJ drama which had involved a number of my friends at the time...I don't know. I really don't.

My very first thought was "Well, the drama with the anon communities and such, and including Old School Idol, is what killed LJ for a lot of people."

My second thought? "Yeah, but that drama was what kept everybody 'invested' so to speak. Facebook killed that with requiring real names, so eventually people could put name + username together. A lot of people circumvented this by either leaving LJ altogether or publicly announcing that they're [username] here and just not posting anything except for...well, Idol entries."

Third thought? "I'm from the first generation of internet users where being anonymous was the big draw. There's a comfort in having a username as a mask, and I resent social media forcing me to take it off if I wish to really communicate via social media. It's everything to do with that more than the drama, although I'll admit I kind of miss lurking in those corners."

The drama on LJ must have been fierce for people to leave.

I can totally see both sides of the story. On one hand, people want to be snarky without reprisal. That's great for them, but not for the people they're critiquing. And, I suppose, THOSE are the sorts of people who are running services like FB and such, which is why they force you to make your statements with a "real name" and "real face" attached.

But it's not like you can't still fake it all, grab a photoshopped image of someone and use it as your icon. Create a name and then base a username off of that. I know a few people who have been doing it that way for a very long while. They haven't been found out, or at least their accounts haven't been disabled, yet.

I think if everyone were a bit more forthright with the circumstances they have to face in their lives/if everyone had a bit more help with the circumstances they have to face in their lives, there would be less angst that needed an outlet by venting at people you don't personally know/care about through social media.

But there I go, tilting at windmills, yet again.
