Green Room - Week 17 - Day 7

Good morning,

Nothing smells quite like waking up to the smell of napalm, it smells like... victory an Idol poll, it smells like... victory.

This Idol poll is very special. You all are very "special".

Personally, I think the Blind Box worked pretty well as a twist. The groupings though are going to interesting to see how they play out.

You may have noticed that I have decided to allow anonymous comments again.

A long time ago, back when trolls roamed the Earth, or at least LJ, there were contestants who were being harassed by them. It got pretty out of hand. So I make the decision to block access to anyone who wasn't willing to actually provide a user name.

It worked really well. At one point, I added "track IPs" when folks would create accounts just to harass people.

Things have slowed down in LJ-land, and due to unforeseen circumstances (or maybe should have seen coming circumstances) there are a couple folks who still want to be a part of the community, but don't want to be a part of Livejournal. Which is a complicated situation.

Last night I realized that I could, on a trial-basis, allow anonymous comments again. That would permit people to comment in the Community proper, without needing to sign the ToS. My goal with Idol has always been to reach *the most* people, not just a select group.

That said, if the troll situation returns or if the spam gets out of control - I may have to restore that restriction. It's something I'm keeping an eye on.

It shouldn't impact the day-to-day of Idol. But if you see anything weird, let me know - and if you are someone commenting without an user name attached, I ask that you please identify yourself in your comment.

This is kathrynrose. <- I need to make a macro for that.

Thanks, Gary, for opening up the anonymous commenting. I've been following the green rooms but haven't been able to say anything.

I yelled at my screen a lot one day when the conversation was about one of our commonly re-hashed "old days vs new days" topics.

Anyway. I brought donuts.

So hi.

*Takes a Donut* Keeps the coffee pot for brewing.

Hello,Good to see you here :)
May. 9th, 2017 04:04 pm (UTC)

It's nice to be able to BE here. :)
May. 9th, 2017 03:25 pm (UTC)
Still kathrynrose.

Also, first.

(oh, hey, this comment delayed because I didn't notice the captcha requirement)

LOL! Definitely make a user pic that says "This is kathrynrose!" It will save you a lot of time!
May. 9th, 2017 04:05 pm (UTC)
It really would, but when you post anonymously, you can't use a userpic.

Good thought though. :)

(still kathrynrose)

Oh well. It was a thought.

Is OpenID an option? You can link OpenID to a bunch of different platforms, including Twitter, Dreamwidth, etc. Doesn't require an lj account, and does make it a little easier, maybe. :)

*Noms on a donut.*

Good morning. I have a severe lack of work motivation today, and am going to the doctor this afternoon to maybe, possibly, finally defeat this cough I've had since January. But all I want to do is curl up and read.

I think opening up the anon commenting given the whirlwind of the spring is a great idea, it's more fun if everyone playing can, um, play.

Oh..Hope you find a remedy today <3 I agree, it will be good to see people in the GR.
May. 9th, 2017 04:05 pm (UTC)
Thank you, me too. I'm starting to think it's an odd adult onset asthma or something, hopefully they can help me figure it out.

Yes, people in the GR is a goodness (and helps me avoid work in a way that feels productive - heh).
May. 9th, 2017 05:31 pm (UTC)
I was diagnosed with adult onset asthma. It's definitely a thing. For women, in particular. And moving....are you around conifers?
May. 9th, 2017 05:42 pm (UTC)
Actually I am, there are a few just down the block, and certainly more here than there were in the Bay Area. Is that a trigger-y thing?

I'm going to ask the doctor to look at asthma and allergies. I've never particularly had seasonal allergies but again the move means there's all kinds of new stuff here.
May. 9th, 2017 05:54 pm (UTC)
The first thing they pitched to me was midlife changes of the womanly kind. Then the conifers which are pollinous in a way that isn't good for the lungs. I wanted to try an allergist...but Obamacare has not been good for the small family-owned business and just to walk in the door of the allergist was $1,400, so I skipped out on that. But did go to a pulmonologist who ran exhaustive and claustrophobic tests and deemed me asthmatic. Sigh.

I hope you get better answers/results.
May. 9th, 2017 10:51 pm (UTC)
My chest x-ray was clear, but I couldn't breath out hard/long enough to get an accurate reading on the lung stress test. I have a referral to a pulmonologist so at least we're working to fix the cause. I also have a new inhaler to try once it comes in at the pharmacy.

Anything that emits pollen or a protein is considered a possible histamine. When I moved to California, I found out that I was allergic to a type of tree that is pretty common in my area- black walnut. They weren't really common in my home state.

We're also in the midst of a high pollen year, so that might count for something.

I hope you feel better.

I am definitely amotivated at work today. That's why I am on here, ha!

The twist was good - and scary - I am in a tribe with a lot of my favorites who are also terrific writers so...eeeek!

I hope the doctor figures out what is up with your cough. That can be exhausting, being sick for so long.
May. 9th, 2017 04:08 pm (UTC)
Unmotivated workers unite!

I didn't look carefully at my tribe-mates yet, that part is always nerve-wracking, especially this far in the game.

Other than at the very beginning and in March when I obviously had a cold on top of this, I haven't felt sick really, I just have a persistent cough. But yes at this point I am done.
May. 9th, 2017 03:45 pm (UTC)
Glad you figured out a way for folks to get in there fully... I just wish I had the time to always be here... :(

I get you, MessyG... I'm in the bottom of my tribe right now and SUPER agitated... Luckily I have a day of mandatory running around the world to take my mind off of the awful anticipation...

Y'all take care... I'll just grab a donut on the way out... *nomnomnom*
May. 9th, 2017 04:09 pm (UTC)
It's way too early in the week to worry about poll placement.

It's much easier to say that to someone else than to remember it myself.

May. 9th, 2017 03:50 pm (UTC)
This twist is terrifying. Everyone on my tribe is such a good writer!

My sister and brother-in-law are going on a trip for their anniversary starting crazy early in the morning, so my husband and I are staying with my niece and nephew for four days. They're 7 and 4, and I've never even watched them overnight before. So it should be an adventure. Hopefully one with a happy ending.

Personally, I prefer waking up to the smell of Teen Spirit, but then again I had "Nevermind" for my topic...
May. 9th, 2017 09:36 pm (UTC)
I thought he was going to make a Nirvana reference too.
May. 10th, 2017 01:05 am (UTC)
I briefly considered writing a piece based on one or more of the songs from that album, but I simply couldn't think of a story that fit that concept. So instead I went with the phrase "never mind", and came up with something I was happy with...
May. 10th, 2017 01:09 am (UTC)
I thought about using the album too, but I am not particularly fond of Nirvana, or of some of the memories they evoke. There was one funny scenario, but I was not in the room when it happened.
