Green Room - Week 11 - Day 7

The last few days have been great for my movie-watching. First we saw Moonlight and then last night it was Get Out.

Saying that both are "completely amazing" probably undersells them.

There's a lot to be said for films where you can just go in and completely escape. But there's something special when the story can be used to make you think, and talk about, deeper issues for hours, and days, after the fact.

The poll closes tomorrow, so make sure to get your votes in! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/991458.html

The Second Chance topic is also waiting for them: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/991512.html

There's a lot to unpack in Get Out, and I'm someone who tends to think that word is overused. But I think it definitely fits here.

It's totally unfair for you to be first.

Yes, it's directed and written by Jordan Peele of the comedy duo Key & Peele. I want to see it, but also horror movies and I aren't always a good match, so this is when I typically wait for video so I can watch it in the middle of a sunny afternoon.

Hahahahaha. Same. Or a rainy afternoon. Either way...with a tea towel wrapped around my head. And maybe not wearing my glasses....

Although, I have to say that a few weeks back I stumbled across The Exorcist on a local channel...and it's just not the same in the middle of a slow weekend day with commercials and hi-def set. YMMV.

I used to love horror films, but I find as I get older not as much. I like your bright sunny day solution.

It is, but an *important* one with a ton of social commentary built into it (but without being distracting)

Well, preparations are in process for Snowpocalypse 2017. Did shopping for myself and The Boyz, I'm getting them outside as much as possible this afternoon, and thankfully I can go into work at 0300 and leave at 0900 at the latest, which is right before the snow starts in earnest. I'm borderline between the 18" scenario and the 8-12" which briefly switches to rain before refreezing. SO's area in CT is due to be whalloped, and guess who forgot his snow boots when he was up here this weekend, hmm?

I have to gas up my car. Oh, and I was scheduled to help our Pizza Store Owner friend paint this afternoon but I haven't heard from him.

I'm on the cusp of 8-12" and 12-18", but the dark pink area on the map that's threatening to dump 18-24" is frighteningly close to me.

We only have street parking and our hose is on a snow emergency route, which pretty much means I park my car and it stays there until the snow melts enough for me to dig it out.

We've got food, wine, and jigsaw puzzles. Bring it on, blizzard. Bring it on.

I get to drive to work in uncertain precipitation in the dark tomorrow morning. And the county I work in is expected to get much more Uncertain Winter Precipitation than the county I live in. *headdesk*

A couple of nights ago I watched Jackie. At times I thought Portman was brilliant, at other times...meh. I didn't find it as interesting as I thought I would. That is, I didn't feel I learned anything new. However, at one point after the closing credits, I read "Jackie Chapter 1." Now that has me seriously intrigued. I know quite a bit about her life in the Whitehouse, and a bit about a short period immediately after, but what I really want to know about is the life she worked so hard to keep private. I don't mean to be disrespectful, but she didn't just build a life for herself and her children out of the public eye, she created a powerful and influential career.

Also watched Inferno. I started the book a while back and got distracted. One thing I will say about Dan Brown is that he knows how to create a very reliable rollercoaster ride for his readers. Not the brightest read, one can easily figure out the mysteries long before they are "revealed", but it's an enjoyable fast-paced race to the finish. Howard's movie is equally fast, but I honestly spent the first ten minutes wondering what on earth was wrong with Tom Hank's face. Whatever he had done it was disturbing.

Also watched Me Before You. Don't know why. Romantic comedy is usually at the bottom of my list. Oh yeah, Daenerys Targaryen. I laughed, I cried. It was actually pretty good for a romantic comedy.

Moonlight is so, so good. I saw it months ago and there are still moments that pop back into my head and demand to be thought about.

The good thing about traveling right before daylight savings time is that my internal clock is already screwed up so today feels oddly normal.

I have not seen any new movies in a very long time.

I did, however, binge watch the three Jurassic Park movies on Netflix the other day.

They should have stopped at one movie.

I hear this, but do NOT boycott LEGION. It's astonishing and amazing and gorgeous and scary and just absolutely worth every invested minute.

Does it have a sense of humor? That's what's driven me away from the superhero genre; everyone is so. serious. all. the. time.

I think so. We're talking about the TV series, right. It's not a laugh a minute, but it has its haha moments.

If it snows and I can't get out... that will happen.

Or it won't happen...
