Green Room - Week 3 - Day 1

I saw this on facebook earlier tonight and it just got me scratching my head. No, it wasn't that grouchy cat. But it was definitely something that he would react to: http://www.xojane.com/issues/mad-back-cosplayer-chaka-cumberbatch

Maybe I just don't "get" cosplay, but I thought the whole point was to dress up as someone other than yourself, and that it didn't matter what gender/racial/whatever lines you crossed in the process as long as your costume was good enough and/or you showed a clear love for what you were doing.

Every single one of you damn foreigners is into this cosplay thing, pretending that you are *real people who matter*! It's a good thing that I know the truth!

***

Speaking of "the truth*, there was a moment of it earlier tonight: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/617342.html

which was followed by the new Second Chance topic: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/617661.html

and of course the new topic for the main competition: http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/617893.html

I've decided to intentionally avoid getting any firsts now ;)

I posted this in the last GR but it was probably way after anyone was paying attention any more, so I wanted to share it again.

My friend who I wrote about in my entry [for the last topic] read it last night (I'd been nervous about showing him). Then he decided he wanted to turn it into a short film with me (he's an actor). I'll have to fix up some of the dialogue but we both think it could be a good way to start a serious conversation on baby dumping in Malaysia. Suddenly I don't feel so helpless on this issue and I might even be able to make an impact.

Also I have additionally decided that I'm going to do my best to talk about what things are like in Malaysia in my Idol entries, given the responses I got last week. I like the idea of exposing more people to a country that is in some ways vastly different from the West.

Man, what's with all the foreign hate, Gary? Are you trying to shame them all out of the competition? THEY CAN DRESS LIKE SAILOR MOON IF THEY WANT.

Hey GR! I don't pop in here much these days because I'm crazy busy... But I have a home game entry for last weeks prompt almost ready to post ( that's the benefit of the HG.... No deadlines!)

I'm also in the process of reviewing a book for a current Idol contestant for my blog too.

So while I may be around a bit less, I'm still here in spirit. Miss you guys!

Don't try to confuse the issue with your narrow gender identities and "accurate names". Maybe Grouchy Cat wants to explore her masculine side!

Nope, I think you've got cosplay exactly right. It's a bonus if you can stay in character the whole time, but just getting the costume right and enjoying yourself is enough.

She has some amazing costumes, and it's a shame that people prefer to fuss about her skin color.

Thinking up ideas for the current prompt . . . the lucky thing about Toronto history is that there's probably a story for any prompt! I think this one will be fun to do :) I just have to find a relevant photo!

Well, since I'm not going to bed tonight, and I JUST thought of an idea for the topic - I'm off to begin Week 3. Woo!

As for cosplay, well, I could chat for hours about that (though having an extremely accurate costume, staying in character, and having a great time are pretty much key elements, absolutely), but I have some other opinions that I'll save for the morning or some other time when I'm not in this current head-space. Luckily, however, this is good head-space for creativity! I better not waste away the hours...

There are some dicks who are into cosplay, but that shouldn't be a surprise, because there are some dicks who are into everything. There was a whole post going around the other day from some now-defunct site with a list of reasons why you shouldn't cosplay. If you're too fat or too dark or too light or too short or too wrong-gendered. And the 'criticism' always comes out the same way race jokes usually do. (I'm not racist/sexist/transphobic, but...) That post is actually the reason I don't cosplay more often. Well, not that post specifically, but just knowing that the attitude permeates the community.

I don't even want to BE a part of the Cosplay Community--though I have friends who are and who do amazing things with amazing costumes and props--I just want to dress up silly sometimes with my friends at cons. So I don't go for accuracy, generally. I go for silliness. My roommate and I are spearheading a whole group of hipster superheroes at D*C this year, just so we can be silly. (And so I have an excuse to make a Winter Soldier hoodie.) And don't even get me started on the girl!Ianto Jones costumes we all pulled together which are totally canon in this one tie in novel.)

One day I'm going to be better at telling all the disapproving people to fuck themselves. In writing and in silly dress up. Maybe. In the meantime though, I make a pretty killer Pam.

The only *proper* Cosplay is when people dress up like members of the Cosby Family. Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids is also acceptable. As is dressing up like a Jell-O pudding pop.

I've never cosplayed, but I'd like to, at least once. Reminds me of all the times I played dress-up/make-believe as a kid, and I'd create a persona out of thin air.

I know I've been scarce the last few days. I'm once again thinking of selling my house, and if I'm going to, I'd like to do it ASAP. I'm on vacation in a couple of weeks, so it's just a matter of forcing my feet to walk the three blocks up to the town square and actually knock on the realtors' doors...For all my previous talk about it, I just can't seem to take that step to get an appraisal, and I can't for the life of me figure out why.

Gotta get ready for work!

I saw that article yesterday and was OMG-ing at the girl's costumes and also how gorgeous she looked in them. Who sees that and goes "Oh, but she's black so it's not as good?" Really, now.

That legit boggles my mind because I grew up in a sheltered-ass, lily-white suburb and never even saw a black person until I was 6 years old (they used to bus kids from "inner city" areas into suburban schools in the 80's). I don't think I'm unusually colorblind or anything and it would just never occur to me to look at those pictures and see any significance in the fact she was black.

Overweight cosplayers in skimpy costumes? That I'd notice. But that's more about my own issues with my body than anything else, and I'm guessing that's how it works with bigotry based on things like race, too.

Cosplay.....I don't get it, but it does seems (what little I know of it) to be open to anyone doing whatever makes them happy. And I am happy about people being happy.....so yeah. Take that for whatever it's worth to you. Bottom line is: everybody be happy doing or being whatever you're doing or being. First rule of life: Do what you will, but harm none.

So... out there in fandom there are Sailor Scouts, large men who dress as Sailor Moon characters, and that's an accepted thing -- but a beautiful black woman is Sailor Venus and that's not? I'd call... what's the word, starts with "sh," seem to remember reading it lately, means something like "stupid unfair bull$#!+"... whatever, I'd call *that* on this.

I should show the article to the_dark_snack, who makes NO apologies for playing Princess Fiona in greenface.

Still, I'm more comfortable seeing a black woman as Captain America than a white guy as Morpheus -- maybe I need to open my mind more.

Just saw that article redirected on ontd_political! I don't get 'cosplay' at all, myself, but she's adorable! What kind of jerk gets all up in arms over that? Maybe they're missing the word PLAY in the Cospay concept. :(

As for the topic... impoetry is either cackling with glee over it, or doubly cackling because it was his prompt! If ever a situation called for Billy Wylde, it's this prompt. :D

Pretty good day. I made roast beef in the crock pot, which I'm trying to learn how to use. Kept the little one happy as he is still sick. And did a stream of consciousness first draft on the topic.

Anyone ever write a first draft and then go through a period where you don't even want to look at it, read it? that's how I feel right now.

It happens to me, too. Sometimes things just need to percolate a while.

Hope your little one is feeling better.

If you want/need crock pot recipes, feel free to ask me. I've been using one since I was big enough to climb on the counter and plug one in, so I have lots of recipes. And, no, I have no idea how I survived my childhood...other than it was the 70s and we were obviously encased in some magic bubble that saved us from cars without seatbelts and Jarts.
