Results - Week 34

What a week, and what a finish! I was starting to think we were heading to “run-off of a run-off” territory!

There is a lot to get into, so I won’t waste any more time getting into it.

First up: The news on “What Special Power did halfshellvenus, as the Spirit of LJ Idol, select?

Her options were:
- immunity (self)
- immunity to give away
- a bye
- bring two eliminated contestants back into the game.

All of these powers would be good until the Top 5.

She ultimately decided on the bye.

Congratulations, and use it wisely!

Now for the poll results, or more importantly, to find out who will be leaving us this week.

Once this is over, we will be at our “Top Ten”, which means that anyone leaving us at this point is pretty much a legit superstar and I really don’t want to hear that they’re not, even from themselves. ;)

I’ll go ahead and announce the Jury’s selections for immunity, since that does have an impact on the results. I had them choosing two individuals this time - and the two contestants who are immune, thanks to the literal Jury of their peers - are halfshellvenus and alycewilson!

Congratulations to both of you!

Which leads right into the vote itself.

People speculated on “what order would the polls be ranked...” and the answer is “the usual way”, top to bottom. So, if someone was eliminated in a previous poll, they can’t be eliminated a second time!

In the run-off, we lost the superstar of superstars - the person who, barring some sort of major act of gods, and/or she doesn’t show up next season at all - has such a huge lead in the “Number of Weeks Survived in Idol” that I don’t see anyone ever catching her!

Yes, we are saying goodbye to the one and only imafarmgirl.

We are also losing the legendary beldarzfixon Well, this identity isn’t legendary, but his regular one is, and considering that it’s the worst disguise *ever*... ;)

The next poll down is a little more tricky: The person on the bottom has already been eliminated. So it shifts one person up. The next person in line has immunity. Which shifts it up to a tie!

But... one of those individuals also has immunity!

Which means we end up saying goodbye to our only newbie leaving us this round! But considering the odds she was up against, it was a truly wonderful run, and I hope that she will be beaming with pride. Especially given all the buzz at various points that she might actually end up in the finals. It didn’t happen - but she certainly got really close!! She deserves every accolade she gets! Goodbye to alien_infinity

Next up, we are saying goodbye to someone that I, personally, wish more people had gotten into earlier than they did. That sounds funny given how close he got to the end, but I, personally, count myself as a fan. He’s certainly been one of my favorites this season, I always knew when I clicked on the entries that I would be getting something entertaining. Farewell to the_day_setup!

Finally, we come to the final poll/result and saying goodbye to someone who, again, I don’t think ever gets the attention she deserves, despite continually doing really, really well! So, I get to say goodbye to her again - yachiru

Thank you to all of you. You were amazing. I hope that we continue to see you in the Home Game! (oh, and of course Welcome to the Jury! With how close these things have been all season long, I have a feeling you are going to be having a pretty huge impact over the next couple of weeks!)

Don't you *DARE* doubt your talent because of this.
Just don't.

You are awesome sauce... and I'm proud to have had you as an intersection partner.

I hope you'll understand if it's a little hard to feel any kind of awesome right after being eliminated.

I do appreciate your comment, though. Thank you.

Well there are two ways you can look at it (bearing in mind that an awful lot of eliminated contestants stick around to congratulate those who were voted out). Either you can go "I was voted out - I suck" or you can go "I was voted 13th out of over THREE HUNDRED people - I'm awesome!!!!"

I know when Alley went, I thought 20th was actually full of awesome sauce and you've done better than that.

It's Idol. The nature of the beast is that lots of brilliant writers will get voted out and go on to sell their work elsewhere because hey. It's Idol. It's just a game. And although it's nice to be in the game, it's still just a game.

I do understand that she put a lot of effort into this and it's hard to be cool with it ending. Obviously realistically, we are ALL (except one) going to be eliminated at some point and even for the winner, it's still going to end. But yeah. As someone who started Idol as a transition from "my life is my infant" back to "oh yeah, I have a life of my own", I am sure it will be hard to let go. I have sacrificed work time, family time, and sleep, not to mention promoting myself when I damn well didn't want to, in order to stay in. It's a game, but we are all in it for our own reasons and a lot of us who've made it this far aren't too keen on stopping. :)

On the other hand, I never expected to make it this far. So that is pretty cool that I have. And when it's over I guess I will have time to bake again? Heh.

Send me cupcakes! Or cookies, those travel better, I think. ;) I went through a phase where I would mail my friends who had gone to university lots of cookies.

Yeah, cupcakes don't ship all that well and also get stale pretty fast. Cookies would work, though.

Funnily enough, I wasn't too keen on stopping when I was voted out either, especially given how the polls were behaving and knowing what I do about what people get up to behind the scenes vs what they say they get up to in public. I put a lot of effort into this season too - I had two IDs right up until the top 50 so I know better than most how much of a time suck Idol can be if you let it.

Having said that, I also know from all the other seasons I've participated in that it only gets nastier and bitchier from hereon in and there's a huge amount of relief that comes from knowing I don't have to get sucked into it.

*shrugs*

The point is, you can either go "I SUCK!!!! I ONLY MADE 13TH!!!!" or you can go "I ROCK!!!! I CAME 13TH!!!!" I know which approach I prefer.

Yeah, I noticed a dramatic increase in "nasty and bitchy" starting at about top 25 and it's only getting worse week by week. While I am thrilled to still be in it, I do miss the time when it was about the writing, how much other contestants liked you, or whatever it used to be about earlier in the season. ;-)

I will admit to anyone that I've been posting voting links since we hit the top 25. Because either my writing has gotten dramatically suckier since then or lots of other people started pimping a whole lot around that point. Maybe both. Either way, if I hadn't been doing that, I doubt I'd still be in. Sort of wish I could say otherwise, but what would be the point in lying about it? I'd still know the truth either way.

And I agree with you. I hope I will look on the bright side when I go out (which is obviously going to be soon one way or another since there are only 10 of us now). But I also know that was a lot more likely about 10 weeks ago than it is now, heh.

(I have no idea how you managed two personas in this game for so long. I can barely handle ONE.)

To be honest, after coming fifth in season 6, I know full well when I start a season I haven't got a hope of doing that well again, even if I were allowed to win. Which I'm not. It's the whole outwit, outlast, outplay thing - I'm actually not that great at the strategy aspect and whoever wins Idol tends to be the person who wants it the most and I just don't want it enough.

My attitude is that as long as you're not breaking the rules, you can do whatever you like to win. And the rules are few and far between. I really don't have an issue with pimping (I think more people should, to be honest) and I don't have an issue with people deciding they're going to support their friends or getting their voting friends to support certain people. What I *don't* like is the secret squirrel aspect that often comes into play with these things. That's when it starts to become nasty IME and it's the nastiness that I dislike (so even secret squirrelling is fine IMO as long as no one gets hurt). It can be easy to forget sometimes that Idol is just a game and it is just for fun - you get so emotionally invested in it, especially when you've been writing to stay in for months and months and months.

I thought I was going to draw the line at pimping past a certain point. Then I saw people doing it and tee-hee'ing behind their hands while they pretended they weren't and I was like OH NO YOU DI'INT. So I'm not going to lie and say I haven't gotten a wee bit catty at times but I do try to keep it in perspective. Like, I have been tempted to do some truly mean things in response to something I saw that was borderline cheating and have held myself back because, hell, in the end it is a game and I have to live with myself after.

secret squirrel aspect? is that like the maybe not so above board stuff that people may try?

It's not not above board so much as behind closed doors. People discussing and implementing strategy in private but publicly saying they're not/doing the opposite of what they're really doing. Not against the rules and a legitimate way of playing the game (I think every season has had a certain element of it), but speaking from experience, it has a tendency to blow up in your face.

Oh boy do I know this firsthand and I'm preparing myself mentally for the onslaught of ugliness that surely will come.

Though you mentioned it comes down to who wants to win it the most... If that's the case, I should have won already :P

Kidding... Mostly. I would love to win more than anything though. That part I'm not kidding about. I take this game way more seriously than I should.

I think anyone who makes it this far really has the fight to win in them or else, getting this far would have been impossible.

"It's Idol. It's just a game. And although it's nice to be in the game, it's still just a game."

The GREATEST GAME IN THE WORLD!

Seriously though, that's not just a tip on Idol. It's a tip on every writing experience out there. You can work really, really hard on something and it doesn't sell or you don't make the cut.
Then you look at someone else who got through and you go "Man, there's something up there! My piece is SO MUCH BETTER than that" - completely missing the point that obviously they were what that market was looking for at that moment.

It's not the end of the world. It's not a condemnation against that market either. It just wasn't what they were looking for at that moment.

It's the same with Idol. If you are able to learn that lesson, here or somewhere else, you are ahead of the game.

*nods*

I just don't think it's any real reflection on anybody to be voted out at this stage. Everyone has their strengths and their fans. Somebody's still got to go. Doesn't mean their pieces weren't good.

Yeah, um. I had a definite favorite out of my three pieces this week. And it did the worst of the three. When you really pour yourself into something, it does hurt to know other people might not have the same connection with it. It's a really valuable lesson to learn, though, too.

Here's another way of looking at it - you're out because of not one, but two immunities. Without those coming into play, you'd still be in the game.

I went out last season because of an immunity. Seeing as the guy who got it was one of my favourites, I didn't feel so bad. Plus, the voters clearly still wanted me in. I had a bunch of people telling me they were sad to see me voted out, and you have that too. Not everyone has that at this point. Really, I mean that. I probably shouldn't say this, but I saw people voted out after me who kind of had people rolling their eyes and ignoring them. It depends a lot on how you play the game, and you clearly played really well to have that kind of support at the end.

I hope you'll see things in a more positive light in a few days. You did an awesome job to get this far.

I'm not here to judge! I have no idea what people's attitudes are to anyone since I haven't been following very closely at all. I can't even really say what factors cause that sort of reaction.
n3m3sis42
Jul. 20th, 2012 03:51 pm (UTC)
I have no idea either, really. As far as I know, people like me? I've made some good friends and whatnot, anyway. But like a lot of us, I have a tendency to be insecure and think people don't like me. And like Alien, I have been writing for less than a year. I never wrote fiction before Idol at all. So I am sure there is plenty of newb stuff I do in my writing to annoy people. ;-)

I think the only piece I've read of yours was the intersection you did with mstrobel, so I can't judge on your last statement either, but clearly I liked that piece enough that I still remember it! That's gotta count for something, right?

Jul. 20th, 2012 04:08 pm (UTC)
If anything I did this season was memorable, I think that's a plus. Although I also tend to think that working with mstrobel would elevate anyone's writing! :D

There are a few things I wrote this season that I'm really proud of, so I guess that counts for something?
comedychick
Jul. 20th, 2012 04:23 pm (UTC)
It definitely counts for something! I think it's important to be able to take pride in your own work, especially in the times when it doesn't look like anyone else is. You can't always count on someone else being there to tell you you done good.
