Green Room - Week 26 - Day 5

I had some comments to make about things that came up yesterday – but honestly, that pales in comparison to the loss of Maurice Sendak.

What an amazing talent and (from everything that I’ve ever read from/about him) a great guy.

Thank you for sharing your world with us Maurice. You will definitely be missed.

On the Idol side of things, there is a poll going on - http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/565570.html

What sad news :(

It's always hard to transition from news like that to other conversation, ya know? It's like whatever bad stuff I want to complain about today pales in comparison since I'm still alive. And anything good would look like I'm being flippant.

I do have good news though... I have a third interview on Friday for the non-profit job. They contacted me much quicker than they said they would, so that's a good sign I think. After the last few weeks of where my current job has been tearing me down and then my ex's sister (of all people) questioning my character over a FB "like", this could be promising. Don't worry, I told the sister off and then blocked her. I stood up for myself, so yay there too. I'm pulling myself out of the funk slowly :)

My husband is more familiar with Maurice Sendak than I am, so I will talk to him about that later.

Yay being on vacation! :) I have read a couple more Idol entries, joined a book club, and diddled around on Farmville and Castleville today, lol. Now I am going to take a shower, and then a walk around the neighborhood (might go for longer today than yesterday, because I don't have an Idol entry that needs writing today), and then when the spousal person gets home we are going to go vote. We have to vote against bigotry today here in NC.

Then we'll probably do our usual Tuesday go out to eat and get groceries thing, so I won't be around too much. But with the being on vacation and all, I am quickly getting through the entries this week. :) Three of the ones I've read so far that I want to give special shout outs to - rattsu's lush and detailed entry, lrig_rorrim's lovely little piece, and jem0000000's very imaginative story from the POV of a wyvern. :)

Sad to see about Maurice Sendak - I really loved Where The Wild Things Are. I even painted a mural from the book once.

As far as the Back in the Game token, I'd like to put my name out there for consideration, as I would really, really, REALLY like to make the 100 weeks mark, and I only need to survive through one more week to get it. I swear that if you guys help vote me back in that I will NOT quit. I know I don't write many HG entries, but I still do follow along.

Also, today is my 19th anniversary married to my wonderful Knightaudit, and we will be celebrating it by driving out to Tombstone, AZ then dinner at The Olive Garden (which is where we went for dinner on our wedding day, as we had a luncheon wedding). Woot!

RIP Maurice... the Wild Rumpus will never end!!!!

Where the Wild Things Are was one of my favorite books when I was a wee lad. I remember being so excited when I heard the movie was coming out but couldn't pull the trigger on it just because I feared it wouldn't do the book any justice at all. Maurice will definitely be missed. :-(

And on that glum note... Greetings Idolers!!! Happy Tuesday to youse guys. Today is pretty decent considering I'm doing the whole work thing and all. But I actually feel pretty good today. So that's a good thing. Sure beats walking around her in a mood for kicking puppies, that's for sure.

Quick question:

Anyone have Mother's Day gift ideas that 1) can be mailed. 2) doesn't cost too much. And 3) isn't flowers, a card or anything sappy or sentimental (my mom isn't the sentimental type really).

Her birthday is a few days later. I suck at these things because she's not a typical mother. She doesn't like flowers or cards, she's not the sentimental type... She doesn't care how she dresses and doesnt enjoy shopping. She won't use any gift card on herself because she's selfless like that and would give it to my nieces or brother even if I insist that she use it on herself. They live in the middle of nowhere anyway, so there's not much the way of shopping or restaurants anyway and they can't afford the gas to drive to St. Louis. For those that don't know already, my family is very poor (like living off of a couple hundred dollars a month poor). So maybe send money? I know my mom would tell me to save the money for myself since I'm struggling too... And it's not like I could send a lot anyway.

This is hard :/

When I lived locally, we would just get together and eat dinner at home then bake a cake for whoever had the birthday. Long-distance makes holidays tough.

Is there a way to send less-perishable baked goods like cookies or something? I mention that because you said you would eat dinner and then bake a cake so I thought of some kind of food-gift. I would suggest buying maple candy, but that's because I suddenly thought of it and am craving some. It's kind of expensive though.

Does she like tea? You could send some nice tea or coffee?

ETA: I keep editing my comment because I keep spotting typos!

In more-trivial news, not much has happened to me yet today that's worth reporting. I got up fairly late and it takes some time for me to be useful in the "morning." I put "morning" in quotes because I woke up at almost 1PM.

Maurice Sendak was awesome, but I really only knew "Where the Wild Things Were." I think I'll seek out more of his work to share with my Kung Fu Panda.

On a completely different note, I need some brainstorming help. I'm going to make these separate posts so it doesn't get too confusing, because some of the assignments are so similar.

Here's the first: I'm writing an article called "Today's Vampires, Good or Evil?" Looking at four or five examples, I'm supposed to make an argument for how the trends are going. This one is due tomorrow by 4 p.m. ET., so I need ideas as soon as possible, if you have any to share!

Here's the second article for which I could use some brainstorming help. This one is due tomorrow morning by 10 a.m.

The assignment reads: "Eva Mendes in 'Girl in Progress' and the female cast of 'What to Expect When You're Expecting"'mark a trend of female actors tackling first-time child rearing onscreen. In light of these upcoming releases, see how these movie moms compare to other actresses playing women tackling the challenge of the first-born on film.

Select four to five movies with strong, prominent female roles matching these criteria. Make sure you're clear in your compare/contrast what qualities you're examining in terms of performance, characterization, etc."

So, any ideas? So far, all I've come up with is Shirley Maclaine in the beginning of "Terms of Endearment," and I really need movies that concentrate for the entire time on the new mom.
alycewilson
May. 8th, 2012 07:20 pm (UTC)
Here's the third article for which I could use brainstorming assistance.

The assignment reads: "With Mother's Day coming up Sunday, May 13, write a movie guide to the best/worst movie moms fitting some criteria of your choice. Break down your picks by some given ideal (best at parenting, nastiest, most/least supportive, quirkiest, etc.) and explain why each one fits into your collection of choices. Select 5-10 examples."

So far, I've got the mom from "Almost Famous" in the "best moms" category and the mom from "Precious" in the "worst moms" category. Any other suggestions?
alien_infinity
May. 8th, 2012 07:25 pm (UTC)
Joan Crawford in "Mommie Dearest" would certainly fit the "worst moms" category based on what I've heard about the movie.

Here's the fourth and final article for which I could use ideas. This one, like the "Best/Worst Movie Moms" article, is due on Thursday.

The assignment reads: "We are requesting content about 'The _____ TV Moms.' Be sure to NOT use the 'The Best TV Moms' because we have more than enough older content on that. Perhaps, 'The Worst TV Moms,' 'The Hottest TV Moms of 2012' (if you choose this one, be sure to keep your language PG), 'The Funniest TV Moms,' 'The Most Eccentric TV Moms,' etc."

So far, I've had some great suggestions from my Facebook moms on my idea, "The Grooviest TV Moms." We've got Mrs. Brady from "The Brady Bunch," Shirley Jones from "The Partridge Family," Linda Flynn-Fletcher from "Phineas and Ferb" and Loreli Gillmore from "Gilmore Girls." Any ideas for other groovy moms?

"Fresh Air" on NPR replayed an interview with Maurice Sendak earlier this afternoon. It just blew me away. He was one of those artists I knew, but at the same time didn't know...I can't even describe what they discussed. The interview's probably on the NPR website if you'd like to hear it.
