Work Room - Week 21
- Mar. 30th, 2012 at 12:12 AM
Ah, the Intersection! http://therealljidol.livejournal.com/55 0720.html
It’s always guaranteed to be a good time, even if it might seem intimidating at first.
The first step to doing it is putting yourself out there. So, who needs to find a partner?
Which topic are you going to take, and why do you think it is the best fit for your strengths?

Is anyone interested in helping me brainstorm a plot-blockage in the novel I'm writing? I've written a post on my LJ. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

ETA: I found a partner. Thanks, Work Room! :)

ANYWAYS, if any of you lovely creatures don't mind being seen with me in public, I could totally use a partner! I'd prob'ly be better at taking up the part of a stirring straw in a drink, as drinking and stirring pots are my specialties, but I'm totally flexible on that.
*tries to give big, sweet, innocent looking puppydog eyes to the workroom*
*is fooling absolutely no one*
Oh, whatever! :D

Please email or PM me!
Has anyone done this before, and have an idea of how the whole things works?
Probably the best thing is to give an example - last year
Some people have pet hates about having to read one first, then the other, but others couldn't care - if you do choose to write something which is better one way round than another, make sure you let people know on the thread so they can do it in the right order :)
Hope that helps! I'm sure others will have some good advice.
Wait . . . should I be pimping myself out? Talking myself up? Telling people about myself (especially since most of my entries are fiction)? I'm pretty bad at all that. Let's just say I'm awesome and leave it at that. ^_^

I think some the best pieces idol has seen were intersections, simply because an idea created/bounced/woven between two people has an incredible chance to be incredibly awesome.
In my opinion, the best intersection pieces are actually fiction, because the ability to write two sides of an idea, or two stories that link up, is dramatically lessened with nonfiction — even if they're both about the same general topic, they don't quite have the puzzle piece fit that fiction pieces offer. But there are always exceptions to the rule ;)
Last week's
I would take caution in making sure your pieces they don't overlap too much — I think readers do want to see two different pieces; too much interlocking, or too similar of a viewpoint, is probably not necessarily good. But on the other hand, while two entries that intersect in name of partner only don't seem that much fun.
In terms of choosing partners, if you've been reading everyone, you should have a list of people that you think are just awesome writers, a list of people that you have become friends with, and a list of people you vote for but aren't your cup of tea. The third group is harder but can surprise you, the second group are probably the easiest to work with, and the first (especially if they think of you the same way) can create some astonishing things.
Play to your individual strengths. Don't be afraid to experiment. Read each other's work often while it's being written (if you can). Trust your partner.

*I say the writing side because there's more to be said about the politics side, choosing a partner with high vote counts, etc., but it's not quite my interest; I'll leave that to someone else :)

I agree that some of the best pieces are sometimes intersections. The reason is what was stated here. I love all my intersection pieces from the last two seasons and always had a blast. I love working with new people; it brings more out in me that I wouldn't have expected. I like to be challenged a bit during intersections too.
And I prefer to write fiction for exactly the reason you state. Though I've done one nonfiction intersection, my favorite are usually the fiction ideas.
I just want to say I second all this. Including the not thinking strategy bit. I like to pick people who write in a style that's interesting to me. That's the best part of it all I think.
*takes self off the market and merrily prances away*

I also wanted to clarify, in case it wasn't clear last night (since I was half-asleep and all), my Gatekeeper post is . And when I said that I was willing to answer questions, that primarily meant in terms of giving feedback on peoples' pieces.
